2026 ALA Report from IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet

The American Library Association’s 2026 Annual Conference & Exhibition was a milestone year for both ALA and the Independent Book Publisher Association. Held in Chicago during ALA’s 150th anniversary year, the conference brought together 14,801 registrants,
2,567 first-time attendees, and 641 exhibit booths for several days of conversation, discovery, education, and planning for the future of libraries.

For IBPA, ALA 2026 marked another important step forward in our work to help independent publishers build meaningful, lasting connections with the library market. IBPA proudly represented more than 230 publishers and more than 380 titles during the conference,
continuing a multi-year trajectory of increased visibility, deeper engagement, and expanded opportunities for our members. As a recently approved ALA affiliate, IBPA’s presence at ALA is no longer limited to booth space. We are increasingly participating
as a partner, convener, educator, and advocate within the broader library and publishing ecosystem.

This growth is reflected in the number of attendees visiting the IBPA booth, and the level of engagement among authors, publishers and librarians. In 2026, IBPA scanned 2,238 unique booth visitor badges over four days, representing approximately 15% of
total conference registrants. That is a significant increase from four years ago, when IBPA scanned approximately 8% of conference attendee badges. Each year, our booth space gets larger, our programming becomes more robust, and our participation
becomes more strategic. The result is a more meaningful point of connection between IBPA members and the librarians who are actively discovering, recommending, purchasing, and championing books in their communities.

A Conference Focused on the Future of Libraries

ALA’s 150th anniversary created a powerful backdrop for the conference. Across keynote stages, educational sessions, and informal conversations, librarians and their partners reflected on the profession’s history and actively discussed the challenges
    and opportunities ahead.

IBPA’s ALA week began on Thursday evening, June 25, at the newly opened Barack Obama Presidential Center, where IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet and Chief Content Officer Lee Wind joined fellow organizations for a conversation featuring former Librarian of
Congress Carla Hayden, Obama Presidential Center Museum Director Louise Bernard, Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown, and American Library Association Executive Director Dan Montgomery. The discussion focused on democracy, libraries, civic
connection, and the collective work of building informed and thriving communities. These conversations are helping inform IBPA’s continued programming and advocacy on behalf of members.

Library Insights Summit: Education, Access, and Industry Leadership

On Friday, IBPA helped host the Library Insights Summit alongside Foreword Reviews and in partnership with the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). The day-long program brought together
established publishers, author-publishers, librarians, and service providers for education, networking, and collaboration focused on the library marketplace.

The summit began with a keynote address from Lee & Low publisher and co-owner Jason Low, who called attendees to action in support of the freedom to read. This message resonated throughout the weekend, especially as ALA programming highlighted censorship,
intellectual freedom, and the role of libraries as spaces of access and connection. Publishers Weekly also noted the prominence of intellectual freedom at ALA 2026, including recognition of former ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom director
Deborah Caldwell-Stone and ongoing efforts to support defenders of the freedom to read.

For IBPA, co-hosting the Library Insights Summit was an important expression of our expanding role. This was not simply a sponsorship opportunity. It was a chance to help shape industry dialogue, provide practical education to publishers, and create a
space where librarians and independent publishers could learn directly from one another. For participating members, the value of ALA is strongest when booth visibility is paired with education, relationship-building, and a deeper understanding of
how libraries discover, evaluate, and acquire books.

A Larger, More Active Indie Press Pavilion

Some larger IBPA members opted to have their own kiosk in the Indie Press Pavilion.

The ALA exhibit hall opened Friday evening from 5:30-7:00 p.m., continued with full days on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and concluded with a final half-day on Monday from 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

This year, IBPA’s expanded booth lined two sides of the aisle with ten bookshelf units and two kiosks, and additionally included eleven kiosks and five bookshelf units in the Indie Press Pavilion – which IBPA managed alongside the Independent Publishers
Caucus (IPC). The larger footprint gave librarians more room to browse, discover titles, attend signings, and speak with IBPA staff, board members, volunteers, authors, and publishers.

In the expanded booth, IBPA represented 380 books, welcomed more than 2,300 scanned visitors, and hosted more than 110 author signings over the four-day conference.

The booth was staffed by a dedicated and engaged team, including IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet; IBPA Board Chair Renita Bryant, founder and publisher of Mynd Matters Publishing; Director of Membership & Member Services Christopher Locke; Chief Content
Officer Lee Wind; former Board Secretary Kathryn Sparks, Senior Editor at the American Academy of Pediatrics; Board Director Richard T. Williams; and an outstanding group of IBPA member volunteers.

Dr. Carl Young signs his book It Takes a Nation of Millions to Fight the Power.

The energy in the booth was strong throughout the conference. With four active signing tables, attendees had frequent opportunities to meet authors and receive free signed books. Many signings drew steady lines of librarians, and some authors distributed
more than 30 books during their 25-minute signing slots. When print copies ran out, authors and booth volunteers kept the conversations going with bookmarks, postcards, and digital edition offers.

That level of activity matters. ALA is not only about visibility. It is about discovery, conversation, and follow-up. Each interaction gives librarians a chance to connect a book with a reader, a program, a collection need, or a community priority.

Thought Leadership on the Conference Program

IBPA’s growing presence at ALA also extended beyond the exhibit floor. Andrea moderated three panels during the conference, each of which reflected the role independent publishers and authors play in broader cultural, educational, and community conversations.

The first panel, titled “Authors as Memory Keepers,” explored how authors, librarians, educators, and publishers can help preserve Holocaust memory for future generations at a time when living survivor testimony is rapidly disappearing and historical
distortion continues to rise. The panel was part of a broader set of ALA programs organized by Amsterdam Publishers, an independent publishing house dedicated to Holocaust memoirs and family narratives.

Andrea also moderated “From Page to Plate: The New Café Beaujolais Cookbook,” a conversation about the creative process behind a cookbook, including how recipes, flavor, place, and story come together on the page. The Collective Book Studio described
the session as a behind-the-scenes conversation with editor and author Jen Newens and chef Julian Lopez about translating food and storytelling into a memorable reader experience.

The third panel, “Shelf to Story: Inspiring Tomorrow’s Authors,” focused on the ways libraries can help aspiring authors better understand the publishing landscape. The session explored traditional, hybrid, and self-publishing pathways, as well as how
libraries can support emerging writers through educational programming and community partnerships.

Turning Booth Traffic into Member Value

Author Kate Parsons signed copies of her book, Pip the Plover.

One of the most important benefits of IBPA’s ALA program is the ability to turn booth engagement into actionable follow-up for participating members.

Throughout the conference, IBPA scanned the badges of librarians and other attendees when they received a free review copy, browsed the booth, picked up materials, requested a digital catalog, or engaged with IBPA staff and volunteers. In total, IBPA
scanned 2,238 unique booth visitor badges over four days. Many librarians returned multiple times to browse, attend additional signings, or look for specific titles, demonstrating the sustained interest in independently published books throughout
    the conference.

Attendees also left the booth with IBPA branded mini-office kits, tote bags featuring IBPA's new logo, and a link to the complete digital catalog featuring all 387 titles on display. This ensured that the books represented in the booth remained accessible
after the conference ended, even when librarians were not able to take every title home in print.

On Monday, IBPA invited librarians to “shop the booth” by selecting one free book to take home in exchange for a badge scan -- with IBPA recording the title they selected. This initiative helped hundreds of books find new homes with engaged librarians,
while also giving IBPA and participating members additional insight into title interest and attendee engagement.

As a final benefit, all participating IBPA members will receive the contact information from scanned badges, making it easier to follow up with new leads, continue conversations, and build on the momentum created during the conference.

Year-Over-Year Growth

IBPA’s ALA presence has grown substantially over the past several years, both in physical footprint and attendee engagement.

Conference attendance was up from both 2025 and 2024, and IBPA’s share of direct attendee engagement continues to grow. In 2026, the 2,238 unique booth visitor badge scans represented approximately 15% of total ALA registrants, underscoring the increasing
visibility of the Indie Press Pavilion and the growing interest in independent publishing within the library community.

ALA 2026 made clear that libraries remain central to the future of reading, access, community, education, and civic life. It also made clear that independent publishers have an essential role to play in that future.

For IBPA members, participation in ALA offers more than booth placement. It offers access to librarians who are actively seeking new voices and new books. It offers education about the library market. It offers author visibility, relationship-building,
lead generation, and industry context. And increasingly, it offers the opportunity to be part of larger conversations about the values and systems that shape how books reach readers.

IBPA’s expanding presence at ALA reflects our commitment to helping independent publishers participate professionally and meaningfully in the library marketplace. As our booth grows, our programming deepens, and our affiliate relationship with ALA develops,
IBPA will continue working to create more visibility, more access, and more practical value for members.

The Independent Book Publishers Association is excited to unveil our new visual identity, marking an exciting new chapter in our organization’s evolution and our commitment to serving the independent publishing community.

This new logo coincides with the launch of IBPA’s new three-year strategic plan in July, and follows the association’s combination with PubWest last year which solidified IBPA’s role as the largest organization for book publishers in the United States.

The new logo and strategic plan reflect our vision for the future and our determination to move forward with purpose, innovation, and dynamism. As independent publishing continues to evolve, so too does IBPA—strengthening our role as the advocate, resource,
and community for independent publishers navigating a rapidly changing industry.

At the heart of our new brand identity is a logo rich with symbolism. The design evokes the image of an open book, representing the stories and knowledge that independent publishers share with the world. Hovering above the open book is a figure of a reader
engaged with its pages—a tribute to the readers who inspire and sustain the publishing industry.

The reader figure carries an additional meaning; its shape suggests a rising sun emerging in the horizon, symbolizing optimism, opportunity, and growth for independent publishers. This sunrise imagery reflects our confidence in the future and our belief
in the enduring power of independent voices.

A refreshed color palette further reinforces this spirit. The logo’s brighter, more vibrant colors convey energy, momentum, and forward movement. They represent the vitality of the independent publishing community and IBPA’s renewed commitment to helping
publishers thrive through education, advocacy and tools for success.

As we embark on a next chapter together, we invite our members, partners, and the broader publishing community to embrace this new identity. The future of independent publishing is bright, and IBPA is excited to move forward with renewed energy in service
    of all independent publishers!

The IBPA Book Award and PubWest Design Award Honor the Top Independently Published Books of 2025

(PORTLAND, OR, May 16, 2026) — For the first time since the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) and PubWest combined in 2025, IBPA proudly announced the winners of both the IBPA Book Award and the PubWest Book Design Award during a two-day
    celebration of independent publishing.

Held in Portland, Oregon in conjunction with IBPA’s annual conference, the separate ceremonies recognized the outstanding achievements of independent publishers, university presses, nonprofit and association publishers, hybrid publishers, and self-published
    authors from across North America.

At a luncheon ceremony on May 15, 2026 IBPA announced the 44 Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners of the PubWest Book Design Awards, honoring excellence in book production and design across multiple categories.

The following evening, at a gala award dinner, IBPA unveiled the winners of the 38th Annual IBPA Book Awards, widely regarded as the independent publishing industry’s most comprehensive and prestigious awards program, covering 60 categories.

Together, the award-winning publishers showcased the extraordinary creativity and diversity thriving within independent publishing. Hybrid publisher She Writes Press led the field with 16 awards won, with The Lab Press taking home 8 awards. In addition, The Collective Book Studio, Johns Hopkins University Press, Koehler Books, and new publisher WaxWing Books each won five awards.

Several standout titles captured multiple Gold awards, including:

Ouimet retired in 2022 following a distinguished career that spanned virtually every corner of the industry. He began as a buyer and manager at the Stanford Bookstore before moving into sales, marketing, and executive leadership roles at Publishers Group
West. He was Associate Publisher and Director of Sales and Marketing at North Atlantic Books and served as a member of both the IBPA and PubWest Board of Directors.

In his final role, Ouimet was a Vice President and General Manager of Publisher Services at Ingram Content Group. During his 15-year tenure at Ingram, he helped support and develop the Ingram distribution brands.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ouimet is widely recognized for his mentorship, generosity, and lasting influence on a generation of publishing professionals.

Dr. Pinky Catalla-Buscaino, publisher of Kuwento Co,, is one among many publishers he has mentored. “Mark has guided me in building my company while also teaching me how to integrate leadership, health, energy, and long-term sustainability,”
she said. “With honesty, he pushes me to think more critically, question assumptions, and lead with clarity and intention. Mark’s impact goes far beyond strategy; it is lasting, personal, and transformative.”

Established in 1991 by PubWest in honor of legendary bookseller and publishing advocate Jack D. Rittenhouse, the Rittenhouse Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to the independent publishing community.
This year marks the first time that IBPA is presenting the award since combining with PubWest in 2025.

Leigh McDonald of the University of Arizona Press and a longtime member of the Rittenhouse Award committee said, “Mark is the perfect person to receive this award in its first year at IBPA. Our goal is to honor those whose legacy in publishing
is one of passion for uplifting the creative and pioneering spirit of independent publishing and helping to grow and elevate the industry as a whole.”

Ouimet will be presented with the Rittenhouse Award during a ceremony at IBPA Publishing University in Portland, OR on May 15, 2026.

selected for its 2026–2027 IBPA Innovative Voices Program.

Since 2023, the IBPA Innovative Voices Program has supported independent publishers from historically marginalized communities as they grow and scale their businesses.
Collectively, these publishers are expanding access to stories that might otherwise go unheard, enriching the literary landscape with fresh perspectives and vital voices.

a comprehensive support package, including a $750 cash grant and free printing for 250 books from IngramSpark; a $200 cash grant from Gatekeeper Press; and an additional $200 from IBPA to be used toward IBPA marketing
    programs.

designed to support their continued growth.

IBPA Issues a Call to Action to Fight a National Book Ban

(Manhattan Beach, CA, April 13, 2026) – H.R. 7661, a federal censorship bill, has advanced out of committee and is headed for a vote in the
    US House of Representatives.

This bill makes it clear that book banning is not about evaluating the content or merits of particular books—it is using policy to isolate, target, and discriminate against under-represented people and communities.

Through vague and expansive language, H.R. 7661 would disproportionately target books for children and teens that include any LGBTQIA2+ characters or content. Labeling Queer people’s existence in age-appropriate books as “sexually oriented” is both offensive
and dangerous. If this discrimination is allowed to stand, it establishes a precedent that threatens all forms of diverse representation, leaving only the narrow perspectives of people in power.

Advocacy organizations are united in their opposition:

Authors Against Book Bans warns that the bill would ban from every public school any book deemed to include “sexually oriented material”. They note “This
is an anti-trans bill at its core, but one that also seeks to lay dangerous groundwork for even more sweeping anti-book legislation that could come in the future.”

In their statement opposing H.R. 7661, EveryLibrary emphasizes “This bill places the federal government in the position of dictating
what young people are permitted to read by threatening to withhold funding if certain viewpoints or topics appear in school collections.”

Unite Against Book Bans urges lawmakers to reject H.R. 7661, stating the bill “should not become the law of the land where
people value civil rights and oppose government censorship.”

IBPA stands in support of these organizations’ efforts to combat this dangerous piece of legislation and urges members to take action in the following ways:

Contact your representative to vote NO on House Bill 7661, and to instead support the freedom—and the right—to read.

(Manhattan Beach, CA – March 27, 2026) — The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) proudly announces the 10 finalists for its 2026-27 Innovative Voices Program that recognizes publishers who are doing meaningful work to amplify underrepresented voices.

Entering its third year, the Innovative Voices Program continues to expand its impact. Since 2023, the program has supported independent publishers from historically marginalized communities as they grow and scale their businesses. Collectively, these
publishers are broadening access to stories that might otherwise go unheard, enriching the literary landscape with new voices and perspectives.

IBPA is proud to announce the 10 finalists for the 2026 program. They are: 1 Plus Books; Contrarian Publishing; Honey Blossom Press; Planting People Growing Justice; Revision Publishing; Space Cadets Studios; Words Worth Repeating; DUKEScomics; Eternal Tree Books; and Stirred Stories.

The Innovative Voices program provides mentorship, resources, and financial support to five independent publishers each year, helping them to strengthen and elevate their publishing programs that center marginalized communities. On April 17, 2026 IBPA will announce the five publishers selected to participate in the 2026–2027 Innovative Voices Program.

Five Innovators will each receive a comprehensive support package including a $750 cash grant and free printing for 250 books from IngramSpark, $200 cash from Gatekeeper Press, an additional $200 from IBPA to be used on IBPA marketing programs, an assigned
mentor who is an experienced indie publisher, and a paid trip to attend IBPA Publishing University 2026 in Portland. Additional benefits include a wide range of free or discounted products and services.

The Innovative Voices Program is made possible through the generous support of principal sponsor IngramSpark, supporting sponsor Gatekeeper Press, and numerous other industry partners.

(Manhattan Beach, CA, March 12, 2026) – The Independent Book Publishers Association is excited to bring IBPA Publishing University to Portland, Oregon, May 14-16, 2026.
For more than 30 years, IBPA Publishing University has been the leading conference for independent publishers, welcoming traditional and hybrid indie presses, author-publishers, and academic and nonprofit presses.

At PubU, publishers gather to learn from one another, build connections, and explore the latest innovations and challenges shaping independent publishing. In addition to breakout tracks designed for established publishers, newer publishers, and hot topics, the conference features three keynote presentations.

The conference opens with Donald Miller, CEO of StoryBrand and New York Times bestselling author of Building A StoryBrand. Miller has sold more than one million copies of his books, and global brands such as Toms and Sealy have sought his expertise on branding and messaging. At PubU, he shares his unique branding framework to help publishers to “Rise Above the Noise. Connect With More Customers.”

Independent publishers often face challenges both getting into bookstores and standing out in an industry dominated by large publishing houses. Friday’s second keynote, “Reaching Readers Beyond Bookstores, Libraries, and Retail Outlets,” features a panel of publishers and industry experts who have found success through alternative sales channels. Panelists include Brooke Warner (She Writes Press), Judith Anderle (LMBPN Publishing), Michael Anderle (LMBPN Publishing), Fauzia Burke (FSB Associates), and
George Walkley (Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing and Bristol University Press).

Saturday’s keynote speaker is Matt Braly, the award-winning animator, writer, and producer of Disney’s Amphibia. In his presentation, “Merging the Worlds of Content Creation and Business,” Braly will draw on his experience as a creator and producer to show attendees how to translate storytelling into a compelling business proposition—and how to collaborate with partners who can help turn creative vision into commercial success.

Registration for IBPA Publishing University is now open. And, for a limited time, IBPA is gifting free copies of Donald Miller's Building A StoryBrand 2.0, to the first 100 attendees who register for PubU (while supplies last).

Letter to members from IBPA's Board Chair and CEO:

Dear IBPA Members,

We are pleased to share the IBPA 2026–2028 Strategic Plan.

This plan reflects our shared commitment to educating and empowering independent publishers while strengthening IBPA’s leadership role within the publishing industry. Guided by our mission to serve the independent publishing community through education,
advocacy, and resources for success, the strategy ahead is anchored in IBPA’s core values: Service, Leadership, Inclusivity, and being Data-Informed. Together, these values underscore our long-standing dedication to expanding
access, advancing equity, and creating meaningful opportunities across independent publishing and the broader publishing ecosystem.

Over the past several months, the IBPA Board of Directors and senior staff have worked closely to develop a clear, forward-looking roadmap to serve our members better, modernize our organization, and reinforce IBPA’s position as a trusted voice and thought
leader. Core to this plan is a deliberate focus on building a more equitable and inclusive publishing ecosystem— one in which independent publishers of all backgrounds can fully participate and thrive.

As part of this process, the board affirmed four core commitments that will guide our efforts over the next three years:

We will equip independent publishers with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to grow and lead with confidence, recognizing that access to these resources has not always been equitable across the industry.

We will advance equity and opportunity across the independent publishing community by supporting inclusive business practices, fair access to education and visibility, and clear pathways to leadership.

We will foster accessible and equitable opportunities for participation and leadership, ensuring broad and diverse representation across IBPA programs, governance, and industry partnerships.

We will rely on data to inform our decisions, so our work is responsive, evidence-based, and grounded in a deeper understanding of gaps in access, participation, and outcomes.

Building on these commitments, the board and executive staff identified priorities and initiatives to strengthen IBPA and contribute to the broader health of the independent publishing ecosystem. These include enhancing the overall member journey and
experience; expanding partnerships with aligned organizations to extend our education and advocacy efforts—particularly those centered on equity, inclusion, and free expression; increasing resources for leadership and business development; and investing
in IBPA’s infrastructure, systems, and data capabilities to better understand member needs and share actionable insights.

    What’s Next?

In the months ahead, you will see this strategic work come to life in practical ways—through updates to our website, more intuitive ways to engage with IBPA programs, expanded peer-to-peer and in-person networking opportunities, and enhanced educational
offerings for you, your teams, and your communities.

We are genuinely excited about what lies ahead and remain deeply committed to supporting independent publishers at every stage, doing so in ways that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the realities of today’s publishing landscape.

As always, we welcome your feedback and look forward to continuing this work together as we pursue our shared goals for 2026–2028.

    With gratitude,

Renita Bryant
IBPA Board Chair

Andrea Fleck-Nisbet
IBPA CEO

Human Creativity First: IBPA’s Framework for AI and Publishing

Independent publishers are confronting a rapidly changing landscape as generative artificial intelligence reshapes how books can be created, marketed, and discovered. For IBPA and its members, this moment calls for thoughtful, values-driven decisions
about if and how AI tools are used.

As CEO, my commitment—and IBPA’s commitment—is to keep human creativity, fair compensation, and a healthy independent publishing ecosystem at the center of every AI conversation.

IBPA recognizes that the challenges posed by AI are serious and immediate. Many large language models have been trained on copyrighted books without consent, transparency, or compensation, undermining the foundation of copyright on which publishing depends.
The market is also being flooded with low-quality, derivative, or misleading AI- generated titles that crowd online storefronts, distort discovery systems, and make it harder for readers to find authentic, human-authored work. Our members express
concern that creative labor will be devalued, professional roles hollowed out, and a diverse publishing ecosystem replaced by automated content optimized for scale rather than cultural value.

These concerns are not theoretical. Surveys of authors in the U.K.1 and elsewhere show widespread economic harm, with many reporting lost income and diminished opportunities as AI-generated material increasingly competes with their work.
Novelists, illustrators, and nonfiction authors alike describe commissions disappearing and rates being pushed down. For independent authors and presses—who already operate on thin margins—this erosion of income threatens not only individual careers,
but the diversity of voices and business models that IBPA exists to support.

The way many AI systems have been developed raises profound copyright concerns. Generative AI models have been built by copying millions of in-copyright books, often including pirated copies, without permission or payment. In the United States, educational
and trade publishers have brought major legal actions alleging that books were copied to train commercial AI systems without authorization. Authors are also encountering AI-generated books falsely attributed to them, or designed to mimic their titles,
voice, and subject matter, confusing readers and exploiting reputations built over years of work. While some retailers have introduced caps or verification measures, enforcement remains uneven, and the burden of policing abuses frequently falls on
    individual creators and small presses.

Within publishing organizations, AI is already reshaping work. Tools are increasingly deployed for editing, copywriting, metadata generation, customer support, and marketing—functions that have long provided entry-level jobs and freelance income. In academic
and journal publishing, AI-driven systems are altering editorial workflows in ways that raise concerns about bias, transparency, and the erosion of human judgment. Overreliance on these tools risks normalizing factual error, weakening editorial standards,
and homogenizing published voices in the name of efficiency. IBPA believes that human editorial expertise is not an expendable cost, but a core safeguard for readers and for democratic culture.

For these reasons, IBPA’s stance on AI is one of caution. We affirm that human authorship must remain central to copyright, and that purely AI-generated works should be clearly labeled and should not displace the legal and moral rights of human creators.
We maintain that using copyrighted books to train AI systems requires consent and licensing; broad, unilateral claims of “fair use” are not an acceptable justification for uncompensated exploitation. IBPA supports legal and policy frameworks grounded
in consent, transparency, accountability, and remuneration, and we oppose changes that would weaken creators’ ability to earn a living from their work.

At the same time, IBPA recognizes that AI tools are already being used across publishing, and that many independent publishers and author-publishers will choose to explore them to improve operational efficiency and strengthen discoverability and marketing
efforts. Our role is not to dictate a single approach, but to help members ask better questions, understand trade-offs, and make informed decisions aligned with their missions and values. In appropriate, supervised contexts, AI may offer practical
assistance—such as grammar and consistency checks, metadata suggestions, market analysis, or customer-service triage—while still allowing humans to retain responsibility for judgment and final decisions. Authors may also choose to use AI for brainstorming,
research support, or language assistance, provided they maintain creative control and are transparent about meaningful AI involvement. Experimentation, however, should never normalize the uncompensated use of fellow creators’ work.

IBPA is actively working with partner organizations to defend copyright and uphold these principles. We collaborate with groups including the Association of American Publishers, the Media Coalition, and the Authors Guild on legal and policy strategies
that affirm that training AI on copyrighted books requires permission and licensing, and that transparency around training data and AI-generated content is essential to a functioning marketplace.

Equally important, IBPA is committed to educating and equipping our members. Through legal and policy coverage, PubSpot articles,
educational programming, and our AI Resource Center, we provide practical guidance on how AI intersects with copyright, contracts, risk management, operations,
and marketing. These resources are designed to help independent publishers evaluate tools thoughtfully, adopt responsible practices, and avoid unnecessary legal or ethical risk while remaining competitive.

We will continue to push back against models built on uncompensated use of our members’ work, advocate for laws and platform policies rooted in consent and transparency and support independent publishers as they navigate this moment with clarity and integrity.

I invite IBPA members to join us by staying informed, strengthening contracts and internal policies, participating in our educational programs, and engaging with resources that help ensure technology serves—rather than exploits—the creators and publishers
    who make books possible.

    In gratitude,
Andrea Fleck-Nisbet
CEO, Independent Book Publishers Association

Interested in further education on AI in Publishing?

IBPA is collaborating with the Independent Publishers Guild in the UK to present their award-winning Master AI for Publishing workshop to our community on February 26, 2026. As course leader George Walkley notes, the program “doesn’t assume a one-size-fits-all approach”; instead, it helps publishers understand the challenges and trade-offs and decide what is appropriate for their
lists, values, and resources. This partnership reflects our belief that independent publishers deserve high-quality, practical AI education that is grounded in real publishing experience rather than vendor hype.

IBPA Q&A: Artificial Intelligence and Independent Publishing

As an example of how AI can be helpful, IBPA staff input the above statement into an AI LLM to generate a more scannable Q&A. It was then checked by staff for accuracy and tone, and is presented here as a supplement to the statement above.

What is IBPA’s overall position on AI?
IBPA believes that generative AI presents both serious risks and limited, practical opportunities for independent publishers. Many current AI systems have been built using copyrighted books
without consent or compensation, raising profound concerns about copyright, creative livelihoods, and the long-term health of the publishing ecosystem. At the same time, IBPA recognizes that some carefully constrained uses of AI may help publishers
improve operational efficiency and marketing effectiveness. Our position is grounded in caution, transparency, and a firm commitment to human creativity.

Why is IBPA concerned about how AI has been developed?
Many large language models have been trained on copyrighted books, including works by IBPA members, without permission, transparency, or payment. This undermines the foundation
of copyright and threatens the ability of authors and publishers to earn a living. IBPA believes that training AI on copyrighted works should require consent and licensing, just as other commercial uses do.

Does IBPA oppose all uses of AI in publishing?
No. IBPA does not take a one-size-fits-all approach. We recognize that independent publishers and author-publishers operate in a competitive environment and may choose to explore
AI tools in limited, responsible ways. Our role is not to dictate whether members should use AI, but to help them understand the risks, trade-offs, and ethical considerations so they can make informed decisions aligned with their values and business
    goals.

What kinds of AI uses does IBPA see as potentially appropriate?
In supervised contexts where humans retain judgment and final decision-making, AI tools may offer assistance with tasks such as:

Grammar and consistency checks

Metadata development and keyword analysis

Market research and discoverability insights

Customer-service triage or administrative support

Some authors may also choose to use AI for brainstorming, research support, or language assistance, particularly when working across languages or accessibility needs, provided they maintain creative control and are transparent about meaningful AI involvement.

What uses of AI concern IBPA most?
IBPA is especially concerned about:

AI systems trained on copyrighted books without consent or compensation

AI-generated books that mimic or falsely attribute authorship

Flooding of marketplaces with low-quality or misleading AI-generated content

Replacement of human editorial judgment with automated decision-making

Contract terms or platform policies that allow publishers’ or authors’ works to be used for AI training without approval.

How is IBPA advocating for authors and publishers on AI issues?
IBPA works closely with partner organizations including the Association of American Publishers, the Media Coalition, and the Authors Guild to advocate for laws
and policies that protect copyright, require transparency, and ensure fair compensation. We support legal and policy efforts that affirm that AI training on copyrighted works requires permission and licensing and that creators’ rights must not be
weakened in the name of technological innovation.

What resources does IBPA offer members on AI?
IBPA is committed to helping members navigate AI with clarity and confidence. Through legal and policy coverage, PubSpot articles, educational programming, and IBPA’s AI Resource
Center, we provide practical guidance on:

Copyright and legal risk

Contract language and disclosure standards

Ethical and editorial considerations

Operational and marketing uses of AI

Evaluating tools and vendors responsibly

These resources are designed to help members make informed decisions—not to promote specific tools or platforms.

Why did IBPA launch an AI Resource Center?
IBPA launched the AI Resource Center to give members a trusted, publishing-specific place to learn about AI without hype or pressure from vendors. The goal is to help independent publishers
understand where AI may be useful, where it may be risky, and where it may be inappropriate altogether—so they can make choices rooted in their values, missions, and business realities.

What is the “Master AI for Publishing” workshop, and why does IBPA support it?
IBPA is collaborating with the Independent Publishers Guild in the UK to present their award-winning Master AI for Publishing workshop to our community.
Led by George Walkley, the program emphasizes asking better questions rather than prescribing uniform solutions. It helps publishers evaluate trade-offs, assess real-world use cases, and decide what is appropriate for their lists and organizations.
IBPA supports this program because it is practical, independent, and grounded in publishing expertise rather than vendor marketing.

What should IBPA members be doing right now?
IBPA encourages members to:

Stay informed about legal and policy developments related to AI

Review contracts and internal policies for AI-related risks

Be cautious about tools that rely on undisclosed training data

Participate in IBPA educational programs and use the AI Resource Center

Join advocacy efforts that defend consent, licensing, and transparency

What is IBPA’s long-term goal regarding AI?
IBPA’s goal is a publishing ecosystem in which technological innovation proceeds within clear, fair rules that respect human creativity. We believe AI should serve authors, publishers,
and readers—not exploit them. Independent publishing depends on trust, originality, and diverse voices, and those values must remain central as new technologies emerge.

Amazon’s 2026 eBook Download Update: A "Reader-First" Change that Publishers Should Understand

By Penny C. Sansevieri, founder of Author Marketing Experts and IBPA member

Amazon has always been, first and foremost, a customer-centric company. Nearly every change or update Amazon makes—whether publishers love it or not—can be traced back to improving the buying or reading experience for its customers. The 2026 update to
Kindle eBook downloads is no exception.

Penny C. Sansevieri is the founder and CEO of Author Marketing Experts Inc., a bestselling author, and an internationally recognized book marketing and media relations expert. She is an adjunct professor teaching self-publishing at New
York University. Learn more at amarketingexpert.com

At its core, this change is about reader flexibility, not publisher control – though there’s some of that and we’ll explore this later in this post. Amazon is responding to a growing segment of readers who don’t want to be tethered to
a single device or app to access the books they’ve purchased. Because readers now consume eBooks across e-ink devices, tablets, desktops, accessibility tools, and multiple operating systems, Amazon is adjusting to meet that reality—while still leaving
the final decision in publishers’ hands.

This update has sparked debate in publishing communities, largely because it makes long-standing DRM choices more visible. But stripped of speculation and fear, what Amazon is doing here is simple: giving paying readers more options, while preserving publisher control over distribution.

Before Amazon’s 2026 update, DRM-free books were still largely “contained” inside Kindle ecosystems. Sharing required technical steps that most readers never took. Now, for publishers who opt out of DRM, Amazon itself provides the download path. That
doesn’t automatically make DRM-free a bad choice—but it does mean publishers should think more intentionally about how their books are likely to be used once files are easily portable.

But before we dig into that, let’s unpack why this change is far less disruptive than it sounds—and what publishers should consider before making any decisions. Let’s dig into what’s really changing, and what isn’t.

What Amazon Is Actually Changing

Starting in January 2026, Amazon will allow verified purchasers of DRM-free Kindle eBooks to download their books as EPUB or PDF files, rather than being restricted to reading exclusively inside Kindle apps or devices. This is applied
to all books published after December 9, 2025. If you published prior to that date, whatever DRM settings you have will remain intact.

Amazon is not forcing this change on publishers. It is optional and controlled entirely by the publisher through the DRM setting inside KDP.

If DRM remains enabled, nothing changes.

In other words, this is a reader-experience option tied to a setting publishers already control.

Why This Feels Big

Let’s face it, whenever Amazon makes a change to their publishing arm or book pages, we all hold our collective breath. And at first, this seemed like a really sketchy idea, because it seemed (at first glance) that this was about downloads and of course,
piracy. But DRM never stopped piracy. If someone wants to pirate a book, they’ll do it regardless of your KDP settings.

Historically, many publishers chose to publish DRM-free because, practically speaking, nothing obvious changed for the reader. Files still lived inside Kindle making the whole choice of DRM feel somewhat abstract.

Now, Amazon is making the consequence of that choice more visible: DRM-free means download-enabled.

That visibility has made some independent publishers and author-publishers revisit a decision they previously made casually—which is reasonable. For this reason, this option could also backfire against Amazon because in a variety of discussions online,
the key element that bothers publishers is that readers can choose to download the book in PDF. Many independent publishers and author-publishers who previously didn’t care about DRM are now going back through their library and toggling it on.

At the end of the day though, the choice for publishers has to be reader-facing because this is simply a convenience for legitimate readers. This update makes life easier for people who already paid for the book. It does not meaningfully empower bad actors.

What Independent Publishers & Author-Publishers Should Consider

Before 2026, downloading and converting Kindle files required tools and technical intent. After 2026, paid readers can download files directly if DRM is disabled.

That lowers friction for casual sharing between friends or colleagues. For most books, that’s a minor concern. For certain categories, it’s worth a pause. Let’s dig into that now.

When Keeping DRM Makes Sense—and Why

While most books won’t be meaningfully affected by Amazon’s new download options, there are specific types of content where keeping DRM enabled is a strategic and practical business decision. This isn’t about distrusting readers—it’s about understanding
how certain books are typically used. Let’s have a look at a few different types of nonfiction books where keeping DRM might be preferred.

Workbooks, Proprietary Nonfiction, Premium Nonfiction, and Group-Use Materials

Workbooks, guided journals, and companion materials are often designed for individual use within a group setting—book clubs, classrooms, corporate trainings, workshops, or coaching programs. While some premium or proprietary nonfiction
    goes beyond general advice, offering:

proprietary frameworks

business systems

step-by-step methodologies

tools intended to be implemented inside organizations.

When these books are shared informally as PDFs, the perceived value of not just the service, but your publisher brand or business can erode quickly. When a single purchased copy circulates within a team, company, or organization, it reduces both sales
and perceived value of the information and the author who wrote it. This can also impact long-tail goals such as speaking, coaching, or licensing opportunities. Or if the publisher or author is using the book to sell a “system,” the perceived value
of that system drops as well.

The same applies to instructional or licensed-use books such as:

training manuals

certification materials

facilitator guides, or

curriculum-adjacent content.

Much like what I mentioned above, these books often underpin paid services, courses, or speaking programs. If they are widely shared as downloadable files, it can negatively impact the brand, and can also affect downstream revenue streams or licensing
    expectations.

Consider this: If you were to give away your book on Amazon (a strategy many of us used a number of years ago) it drops the value of the information, and any services you may offer, considerably.

When Going DRM-Free Can Make Sense

Just as there are cases where DRM is preferred, there are also many situations where allowing DRM-free downloads aligns well with how readers actually use books.

Publishers Focused on Reach Over Restriction

Publishers who prioritize reach, discoverability, and long-term audience growth may find DRM-free access a reasonable trade-off. In practice, these authors often view the book as an entry point into a broader relationship—rather than a tightly controlled
asset. But you can also be strategic about this, too. For example, if you’ve written series fiction, making the first book in the series DRM-free might be a great way to invite more readers into your world. This is where authors used to make the first
book in a series free, a popular idea until lots and lots of authors jumped on this free bandwagon and diluted the impact.

Narrative Fiction and General-Interest Nonfiction

For most commercial fiction—and much of narrative or idea-driven nonfiction—DRM-free access rarely changes how the book circulates in the real world. These books are typically consumed individually and valued for experience rather than any tools or proprietary
    guidance.

In these cases, easier access across devices can improve reader satisfaction without materially increasing misuse.

Reader Convenience and Accessibility

For some readers, having access to a book they don’t have to read on their Kindle, specifically, could be helpful. They may not own one or just prefer desktop reading. The other factor are to keep in mind are accessibility tools that work better with
    EPUB or PDF formats.

Allowing DRM-free downloads removes friction for these readers—especially those who have already paid for the book and simply want to read it in the way that works best for them. If you have a large segment of readers that might benefit from this, it’s
    certainly worth a solid consideration.

Final Consideration

It’s easy to say that you want all of your books protected, and that’s fair. But this new option that Amazon is rolling out helps give authors smarter options, and gives readers more choices, which as I said in the beginning of this post, is really what
Amazon is all about. The final decision to go DRM-free shouldn’t be based on pressure or ideology. It should be based on how the book is likely to be used once it’s downloaded.

If broader access improves the reader experience without undermining the book’s value or intended use, DRM-free access may be a perfectly sound choice.

What This Does Not Affect

Since I’ve seen this in some discussion forums it’s worth mentioning that from an Amazon performance standpoint, this change does not impact or influence:

search visibility

rankings

ad performance

conversion rates

reviews

Kindle Unlimited income

Amazon’s algorithms do not factor DRM settings into discoverability. This is a reader-access decision, not a marketing one.

The Smart Way to Think About This

This update rewards thoughtful consideration. Instead of asking, “Will this leave me open to piracy?” (which we know can happen regardless) the better question is:
“Does expanded file access align with how my book is meant to be used?”

In the end, much like Amazon’s motives with this change, the thing that matters most is the reader experience and how they want to consume your book.

And if it didn’t feel like a big deal to you at first glance, that instinct is probably right.

The fundamentals of selling books on Amazon haven’t changed. Success still comes down to positioning, discoverability, reader alignment, and long-term strategy—not technical settings.

Letter from IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet

Dear colleagues,

I’m pleased to share that IBPA’s Innovative Voices Program is now open for applications for its third year.

This program reflects one of IBPA’s core commitments: building a publishing industry that is equitable, inclusive, and fair, one where all voices are honored and where content creators and publishers are paid fairly for their work.

Since its launch in 2023, the Innovative Voices Program has supported independent publishers from often marginalized communities as they build and scale their businesses. Collectively, IBPA Innovators are expanding access to stories that might otherwise
go unheard and elevating voices and perspectives across communities.

The impact of this work is clear. The first cohort of Innovators included Sambasivan & Parikh, Sawaga River Press, Shout Mouse Press, Taevo Publishing, and Thinking Ink Press. In the program’s second year, recipients included Con Todo Press, Iskanchi
Press, MathXplorers, Shaherazad Shelves, and Waub Ajijaak Press & Foundation—all publishers whose work continues to strengthen and diversify the publishing ecosystem.

At its heart, the IBPA Innovative Voices Program is about removing barriers and expanding opportunities to ensure that diverse perspectives are supported and resourced, as well as investing in publishers who are pushing boundaries and creating meaningful content.

If you—or someone you know—could benefit from this program, I encourage you to apply or share this opportunity with your colleagues or peers who may not yet be connected to IBPA. Your outreach can make a real difference.

Please take a moment to learn more about the benefits of the Innovative Voices Program and help us spread the word. Together, we can continue building
a publishing industry where opportunity is real, creative work is respected, and diverse voices thrive.

    With appreciation,

The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) is now accepting nominations for the Rittenhouse Award, an annual honor historically given by PubWest in memory of Jack D. Rittenhouse, the West’s legendary book man.

Jack Rittenhouse was a multi-dimensional individual for whom books were a way of life. He circumvented many barriers of his time to help establish and elevate printing arts, writing, editing, and publishing in the emerging field of Western history. This
award was established in 1990 to continue his legacy and recognize those who have made their own important contribution to the community of the book in the West.

Although no longer specific to the geographic West, nominations should honor those who have made a significant and lifelong contribution to a pioneering and independent spirit of books and book publishing. Nominations are open to publishers, authors,
booksellers, sales representatives, librarians, and book designers. One does not have to be a member of IBPA to be nominated, and the award may be given to a living person or awarded posthumously. Nominations may be made by any member of IBPA, as
an individual or in a role as a corporate member.

Nominations will be open from December 1 through January 31, 2026. The award committee will review the candidates in February and select a proposed winner to be shared with and approved by IBPA’s Board of Directors.

The award will be presented to the recipient at IBPA Publishing University, which takes place May 14– 16, 2026 in Portland, Oregon.

To nominate a candidate, please fill out this form by January 31, 2026.
Independent Voices on the Global Stage: IBPA Brings Member Publishers to the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair, Welcoming Over 240,000 Visitors

(Frankfurt, Germany – October 2025) — For nearly forty years, IBPA has carried the voices of independent publishers onto the international stage at the Frankfurt Book Fair—the largest and most influential gathering of publishing professionals in the world.
This year’s event reaffirmed the creativity, professionalism, and camaraderie that define our community.

Together with our COO, Terry Nathan, and former PubWest director, Michele Cobb, we proudly represented IBPA’s members throughout the week, meeting with dozens of publishers, agents, authors, and industry partners eager to learn more about our members’
books and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

A Fair Alive with Innovation and Exchange

The 77th Frankfurt Book Fair was alive with creativity and conversation. With more than 4,300 publishing companies from 92 countries and trade visitor numbers surpassing 118,000, the fair showcased the vitality and resilience of the global publishing
    community.

While rights trading remained central, much of the energy also centered around discussions on emerging technologies, audiobook growth, and digital rights management. The LitAg Center buzzed with dealmaking and cross-border collaboration.

Meanwhile, more than 120,000 public visitors enjoyed 3,300 cultural events, from author readings to performances celebrating literature’s global reach.

This year’s Guest of Honor, the Philippines, brought rich cultural exchange and renewed attention to Southeast Asian publishing, adding depth and vibrancy to the international showcase.

IBPA’s Cooperative Booth: Independent Publishing on the Global Stage

At the heart of the international halls, IBPA’s cooperative booth served as a vibrant hub for independent publishing, positioned among the many large indie publisher stands that IBPA helps manage each year.

IBPA represented more than 150 member publishers and 207 titles, welcoming hundreds of visitors throughout the week. Neighboring booths—Sourcebooks, Lerner, Llewellyn, and New Harbinger Press, among others—added to the steady flow of publishers and agents,
creating lively exchanges and putting many eyes on the books featured at our stand.

Global Networking & Business Development

Throughout the week, IBPA participated in more than 50 meetings with publishers, agents, distributors, and service providers—each one an opportunity to showcase IBPA member titles and strengthen the visibility of independent voices in the global marketplace.

Terry, Michele, and I met with rights agents and publishers from around the world to highlight the creativity and quality of our members’ books and to explore new pathways for international rights sales, translations, and co-publishing ventures.

Beyond rights discussions, we also connected with leading organizations and service providers to build new business opportunities for IBPA members. Conversations spanned AI and copyright, digital distribution strategies, and emerging models for rights
licensing, underscoring the innovation shaping the industry’s future.

Organizations we met with included Book Industry Study Group, BookWire, Books International, Combined Book Exhibit, Firebrand, Foreword Reviews, Hoopla, Ingram Content Group, IPG UK, IPG US, Metacomet, Nielsen, Ozlem Printing, Publishers Weekly, StoryWise,
    and Supadu, among others.

IBPA staff and board representatives hosted the annual Indie Publishing Mixer at the Holiday Inn Alte Oper, just steps from the convention center. The event brought together more than 50 members and industry colleagues to network, share stories, and strengthen

BISG Launches Season of Giving Challenge to Support We Are Stronger Than Censorship

(New York, November 1, 2025) -- This Season of Giving, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) invites its members and the broader publishing community to join the We Are Stronger Than Censorship campaign to ensure that every reader has access to diverse, inclusive, and empowering stories. BISG has launched a $16,000 Season of Giving Challenge to fund the purchase and donation of 2,000 books to offset 1,000 book challenges— helping restore access to titles that have been banned or challenged in communities across the United States.

Support the Freedom to Read: Your Gift Makes a Difference

By donating to the We Are Stronger Than Censorship campaign through BISG’s Season of Giving Challenge, supporters will help put books back into the hands of readers who need them most.

“During this Season of Giving, BISG is proud to support We Are Stronger Than Censorship. Together, we’re giving back in the most powerful way we know — by ensuring that every reader, everywhere, has access to the stories that inspire empathy, reflection,
and understanding,” said Brian O’Leary, Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group.

“When books are banned, what’s really being silenced are the voices, experiences, and truths that help us understand one another,” he continued. “With this challenge, every dollar raised, every book donated, is an act of courage and hope — a reminder
that together, we can make sure every reader sees themselves reflected on the page.”

“We are not powerless in the face of censorship, and we do not have to play defense,” said Lee Wind, Co-Founder of We Are Stronger Than Censorship and Chief Content Officer for the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). “Since
launching in September 2024, We Are Stronger Than Censorship has raised enough to offset 1,400 book challenges, meaning we’ve been able to buy and distribute 2,800 books so far.”

“The ultimate goal is to pull the brakes on the runaway train of book banning, by making the numbers work against the people so eager to block other people’s freedom to read.” Wind continued, “We’re excited to have BISG put out this challenge to turbo-charge
the program and offset even more book challenges. It’s the perfect initiative for this season of giving, and we’re grateful to BISG and the community for coming together to make this happen.”

Recognizing Leadership and Impact

Earlier this year, Lee Wind was named BISG’s 2025 Industry Champion, an honor recognizing individuals whose efforts have advanced the publishing industry as a whole.

Wind was celebrated for co-creating We Are Stronger Than Censorship, transforming the industry’s response to censorship into one of proactive generosity and inclusion.

“Lee’s work exemplifies innovation with purpose,” said O’Leary at the time of the announcement. “In the face of rising book bans, he created a program that doesn’t just raise awareness — it takes measurable, hopeful action to make sure readers continue
to see themselves in the books they borrow and buy.”

Wind’s recognition underscores the deep alignment between BISG’s mission to foster an inclusive publishing ecosystem and the campaign’s goal to restore access to the stories that strengthen our shared understanding.

The BISG Season of Giving Challenge

During the months of November and December, BISG members are challenged to collectively raise $16,000 to purchase and donate 2,000 banned and challenged books.

Every contribution — large or small — helps amplify voices that deserve to be heard. With the industry’s support, BISG and its partners can continue to empower readers, uplift authors, and stand united for the freedom to read.

Because when we give the gift of reading, we give the gift of understanding, empathy, and strength.

The EveryLibrary Institute, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, proudly serves as the fiscal agent for the We Are Stronger Than Censorship campaign. Every donation is tax-deductible and goes directly toward buying and donating banned books
to readers and communities across the country.

Industry Brief: Baker & Taylor Closure and What It Means for Independent Publishers

A Letter from IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet

Dear IBPA Members,

As many of you are likely aware, after almost 200 years in business, Baker & Taylor will be closing its doors effective January 2026, following the breakdown of a potential asset acquisition by ReaderLink. These changes will have a consequential impact
across the global publishing ecosystem, potentially affecting supply chains, agreements, and strategic planning.

IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet

IBPA has been monitoring these developments closely and has reached out to Baker & Taylor to help members navigate next steps. The goal of this communication is to summarize what has happened, outline potential impacts to your business, and share
    guidance for moving forward.

What Happened

Earlier this fall, ReaderLink and Baker & Taylor (B&T) announced a planned acquisition expected to close in late September 2025. However, the two companies mutually agreed to terminate the deal.

Under the proposed terms, ReaderLink would have acquired B&T’s assets without assuming its outstanding liabilities.

Following the deal’s collapse, B&T CEO Aman Kochar announced plans to wind down operations.

B&T has laid off more than 500 employees and plans to cease operations by January 2026.

Some divisions, such as Baker & Taylor Publisher Services, may be considered for sale, though no confirmations have been made.

What It Means for Publishers

Supply Chain Disruptions: Expect possible order cancellations or delays as B&T phases out operations.

Outstanding Balances: Publishers with unpaid invoices may face uncertainty regarding payment.

Contract Review: Review active agreements for termination or continuity clauses.

Market Shifts: Other wholesalers, specifically Ingram, may fill the gap left by B&T, but short-term disruption is likely.

Recommended Next Steps

Assess your exposure: Identify any open orders, unpaid balances, or active contracts with B&T.

Communicate directly: Request written updates from B&T on your account and fulfillment status.

Secure alternatives: Begin transitioning to other wholesalers or direct distribution partners.

Document everything: Keep all correspondence, invoices, and records related to B&T.

Stay informed: IBPA will continue to monitor the situation and share updates as they become available.

IBPA is committed to supporting members through this transition and ensuring independent publishers’ needs are represented during this industry shift. If you have questions or information to share, please reach out to info@ibpa-online.org.

With appreciation,

IBPA Member Update: Bartz v. Anthropic Copyright Settlement

As part of IBPA’s ongoing mission to educate and empower members, our Legislation and Standards committee has been working closely with the American Association of Publishers (AAP) and the Authors Guild to keep members apprised of the Bartz v. Anthropic class action suit that has been levied against AI research and development company Anthropic for copyright infringement.

The following is a breakdown of the case status, its potential impact on IBPA members, and steps publishers can take to participate and/or keep informed as this class action suit develops.

What is the case about?

A proposed $1.5 billion class action settlement has been reached in the lawsuit against Anthropic, an AI company accused of copying and using hundreds of thousands of books from “pirate” eBook sites like LibGen and PiLiMi to train its AI systems—without
    permission from authors or publishers.

Only books downloaded by Anthropic from these “shadow library” sites, and properly registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, are eligible for compensation (about 500,000 titles). Both authors and publishers may have claim rights if their works are included.

If approved by the court, Anthropic will pay at least $1.5 billion to a settlement fund for distribution among affected rights holders, and must destroy the files it illegally obtained. The settlement covers only past copyright violations, up to August
25, 2025, using these specific works. If your book is excluded, you retain all legal rights. Accepting payment means waiving your right to sue Anthropic again for past activities—but not for infringing AI outputs or future violations.

The final list of included titles will be searchable online after approval. Official notices will be sent by email/mail, and you may preregister contact info at www.AnthropicCopyrightSettlement.com to ensure you receive notification.

been elected Board Chair of the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), effective August 30, 2025 through June 30, 2026.

Bryant will succeed Tieshena Davis, who stepped down on August 15, 2025,
after serving four years as a board director and one year as Board Chair. Previously IBPA’s Vice Chair, Bryant brings more than a decade of experience leading a successful hybrid publishing company, championing independent voices, and serving on IBPA’s
Board of Directors for four years, including the Executive Committee (2024 – 2025) and as Membership Committee Chair (2021–2024). In addition to her board service, Bryant has supported IBPA’s broader initiatives, including her work as an Innovative

“Renita’s vision, strategic insight, and proven leadership make her the ideal person to guide IBPA during this exciting chapter,” said IBPA CEO Andrea Fleck-Nisbet. “I have great confidence in her ability to steer the organization forward,
and I look forward to working alongside her to serve our members and strengthen the independent publishing community.”

Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for IBPA, as the association prepares to launch a new three-year strategic plan in January 2026, expand its advocacy on national and legislative issues, and roll out innovative member programs—including new benefits
    for large independent publishers.

“I am honored to step into the role of Board Chair for IBPA, the nation’s leading trade association dedicated to serving independent publishers,” said Bryant. “My journey on the board began over four years ago and has been defined by a deep commitment
to equity, innovation, and data-driven solutions. I’ve always seen independent publishing as a vital engine of creativity and cultural vibrancy, and IBPA’s work to support, educate, and advocate for this community is indispensable. Together, we will
champion independent voices, foster sustainable and scalable business practices, and ensure that publishers of all sizes have the tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive in our dynamic and rapidly changing industry.”
