As a way to give back to an industry which has given him a very successful legal career for over 30 years, IBPA member Alan J. Kaufman has lowered his standard hourly rate from $550 to $450 for IBPA members and, when appropriate, will cap his fees.


About Alan J. Kaufman

Alan J. Kaufman has more than 30 years of book publishing legal expertise and a thorough knowledge of the business of the book industry. Immediately prior to entering private practice, Mr. Kaufman served 20 years as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Penguin Books, where he was responsible for all of Penguin's legal matters and, as a member of Penguin's Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the business management of Penguin. Mr. Kaufman focuses on print and digital publishing and related media, the negotiation and drafting of publishing, licensing, and distribution agreements, trademark, copyright and libel counseling.

Mr. Kaufman specializes in the pre-publication legal review (vetting) of book manuscripts for libel, invasion of privacy and copyright infringement for traditional publishers, hybrid publishers, and authors. Mr. Kaufman also specializes in the review and/or negotiation of publishing agreements.
