(Manhattan Beach, CA - October 31, 2019) -- The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) praises the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the CASE Act, H.R. 2426 on October 22, 2019.

The Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act (aka the CASE Act) is a proposed law that would provide a new means for copyright holders to seek payment for infringed works. The bill was introduced on the House floor by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on October 22nd. Rep. Jeffries was supported by Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), who introduced the bill back in May 2019 following 10 years of organizing efforts. By the end of the day, the bipartisan bill was approved by the House of Representatives 410 to 6.

With the passage of the CASE Act in the House, the next step is passage by the Senate, then the bill will need to be signed into law by the president.

IBPA CEO Angela Bole said, "IBPA was pleased to support the CASE Act through efforts coordinated by the Copyright Alliance. In the days leading up to the vote, members of IBPA's Board of Directors and Advocacy Committee joined a synchronized effort to send emails and make phone calls to hundreds of House Representatives in support of the bill. IBPA will do the same when it's time for the bill to be introduced in the Senate."

In an October 22nd press release, Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid explained, "There’s a long list of supporters in Congress that we want to thank for their unbridled support of the CASE Act and the creative community. At the top of that list is Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Doug Collins (R-GA) for their leadership in introducing the CASE Act in the House. We also thank the original co-sponsors of H.R. 2426, Representatives Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Martha Roby (R-AL), Judy Chu (D-CA), Ben Cline (R-VA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). And our appreciation extends to all co-sponsors of this critical legislation."
