Angela Halgrimson poses with fans at her recent Barnes & Noble book signing.
IBPA members Beaver’s Pond Press believe that mentoring authors and publishing books is the best kind of work there is. The small group of passionate “book nerds” have created a press that directly connects with enthusiastic authors on a personal level. As a result, Beaver’s Pond authors have seen great success and critical acclaim. Angela Halgrimson is a wonderful example of a Beaver’s Pond author who has thrived. After surviving two traumatic brain injuries, Halgrimson decided to pursue her passion for writing full-time, and has become an active member of the independent publishing community. She has written two children’s books, both of them recipients of a Mom’s Choice Award. Her first title Lenny the Crow also received an IPPY award, while her most recent, Nobody Likes a Booger was a silver winner in IBPA’s 30th annual Benjamin Franklin Award™ program. In addition to writing, Halgrimson hosts the podcast "The Not Boring Book Show", and frequently travels for school visits and signings.

Sarah Dawgert and her sister, Woodland Way award-winning author Catherine Dawgert, strike a pose at the Moonbeam Children's Book Award ceremony.

Sarah Dawgert and Jim McVety have recently been featured in the Newswatch segment on WNEP 16. The parents began their publishing journey from home. Their press, Woodland Way, was created to help enrich the lives of parents and children everywhere. And their press is no ordinary publishing company — their children, Owen, Anna, and Maya, are an active part of the team, helping with editing, creating cards, and more! "Our mission is to publish books that promote things like kindness, respect, empathy, resilience, and laughter," Dawgert explains. “I think that those five particular values are really important for a growing family and for parents to share with their children.” Woodland Way has published six titles and received three awards, including a silver 2018 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ in the Children’s Picture Book (0-3 years) for their title Trains/Los Trenes. Moving forward, they hope to take on more authors and illustrators and are excited to expand Woodland Way press!

Maryann McFadden is the award-winning author of four titles.

Three Women Press’ published author, Maryann McFadden, brings to life a young woman's voice that was silenced 130 years ago. The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife is a book she believes she was destined to write. On April 1886, Tillie Smith was the victim of a violent crime that resulted in her death. After her alleged murderer, James Titus, was arrested, her name was smeared and her virtue was called into question. “Much like the fallout so many women experience [after coming forward to report crimes] today,” explains the author, “Tillie was essentially put on trial herself as her ‘reputation for chastity’ was questioned in an effort to save her assailant." Three Women Press was founded five years ago by three women with the goal of publishing great books that might not otherwise reach readers. “We were writers, editors, marketers, and saleswomen, determined to find those books that might slip between the cracks of the big houses,” the publishers state. As McFadden has already found great success with booksellers (and received three Indie Next Pick awards for previous titles), Three Women Press is looking forward to the book’s upcoming release and an exciting 2018!

Lauren Curwick, illustrator and Medical College of Wisconsin pediatric oncology student & Designing Dreams President, & Joe Dean, author and CMO of The MACC Fund.

Author publisher Joe Dean, who recently appeared on "The Morning Blend", has dedicated his life to service. He is the founder of Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, an advocate for childhood cancer research, and an active blogger at Power of Humans. His award-winning 2017-published title, My Dog Named Hope - A Special Girl, Her Amazing Dog, and One Family’s Journey Through Childhood Cancer, is truly a gift for those bravely battling the illness. 100% of all proceeds go to the MACC Fund and Designing Dreams USA, foundations that directly support pediatric cancer research and services. The book, which was underwritten by The We Energies Foundation, includes uplifting illustrations by Lauren Curwick. Readers have found the story to be both inspiring and comforting. “This is a wonderful book to help children (and those who love them) better understand cancer while assuring them that they are not alone,” says reviewer Michael Weber, PhD. “We could all learn from this heart-warming story.” My Dog Named Hope is also the recipient of a silver 2018 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ in the Interior Design: 3 or more Color: Children's/Young Adult category.

Scott Semegran is the Texas-based award-winning author & illustrator of five independently published books.

Sammie & Budgie, published by Mutt Press, has been recognized as the First Place Winner for Fiction in the 2018 Texas Authors Book Cover Awards! Author publisher Scott Semegran is both a Kindle bestselling writer and a passionate cartoonist who has written and illustrated five titles. His newest novel explores the bond between Simon, a caring father and his children. After his young son Sammie’s gift of foresight is revealed, the family embarks on a journey to visit Simon’s ailing father in San Antonio, TX. The book has been praised by readers, who have been moved by the mystical, endearing story. “Sammie & Budgie is instantly absorbing, its affable narrator hooking you with wit and whimsy, then reeling you into the boat where larger revelations await,” raves Davy Rothbart, a contributor for "This American Life". “This book will delight readers of all ages, while leaving them with plenty to ponder about their own lives.”
