(Chicago, IL - December 21, 2016) -- Chicago Review Press Incorporated, the parent company of Chicago Review Press (CRP, and national distributor Independent Publishers Group (IPG,, has acquired Parenting Press ( The acquisition will go into effect on January 1, 2017.

Parenting Press was founded in 1979 by parent educator Elizabeth Crary. The Press’s first title, written by Crary, was Without Spanking or Spoiling: A Practical Approach to Toddler and Preschool Guidance (9780943990743). Since then, Parenting Press has carved a niche for itself as a source for practical parenting and children’s books. Most of its books are based on the teaching and counseling experience of the authors and are field tested by parents, child guidance professionals and children. They tackle tough topics such as peer pressure, bullying, petty theft, grief, death, and feelings like frustration, anger, and fear. They talk about getting kids to take on chores, about surviving adolescence, and about adapting guidance techniques to a child’s temperament.

A trailblazer in literature on children’s personal safety, Parenting Press published the book It’s MY Body: A Book to Teach Young Children How to Resist Uncomfortable Touch by Lory Britain (9780943990033) in 1982, after no other major publisher would consider a title on sexual abuse. The Press’s bestselling and most popular book to date is The Way I Feel by Janan Cain (2000; 9781884734717), with approximately 2 million copies in print, including English, Spanish, French and other foreign language editions.

The Parenting Press name will live on as a new imprint for Chicago Review Press, where its books will be kept in print and under which new CRP parenting titles will be published. Chicago Review Press Publisher Cynthia Sherry will oversee the acquisition and IPG will continue to distribute all new and backlist Parenting Press titles under CRP instead. CRP will not be taking on any Parenting Press staff with the acquisition. Parenting Press Founder and President Elizabeth Crary plans to retire from publishing but will continue her work as a parent educator and author.

“The acquisition of Parenting Press by Chicago Review Press is a dream come true for a small publishing house whose owners are ready to retire,” stated Carolyn Threadgill, Parenting Press’s Publisher. “Chicago Review Press is a compatible home for the Parenting Press list of skill-building books for parents and children and those professionals who work with them. We know, too, that the Parenting Press authors of the past and the future will be well looked after by Chicago Review Press staff.”
