Hybrid Publisher Claire Aldin Publications Accredited by the Better Business Bureau

How can authors who want to work with a hybrid publisher know which are the legitimate hybrid publishers and which to avoid? That’s one of the main reasons IBPA created the IBPA Hybrid Publisher Criteria. It’s also why this week’s Member Spotlight on hybrid publisher Claire Aldin Publications is such interesting news.

Recently, Claire Aldin Publications was accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in Michigan, helping to validate the hybrid publisher for interested authors.

“When I got the phone call from an accreditation specialist inviting Claire Aldin Publications to join other Better Business Bureau accredited businesses, I was ecstatic!” says President and Founder Dr. De’Andrea Matthews.

De’Andrea was asked by the BBB to fill out an application, which includes information such as how long her company has been in business, their revenue, their business practices, the number of clients they have, and more.

After that, the BBB did research on her business to make sure it honestly represents its products and services; to verify that the information presented in the application is accurate; and more. The goal of all this research is to determine whether the company lives up to the Better Business Bureau Standards for Trust. The entire application process normally takes 48 hours.

De’Andrea is well aware of the criticisms of hybrid publishers, and it has taught her valuable lessons. “I’ve read multiple blogs and other sites which warn about predatory hybrid publishers. While disheartening to see what others have experienced, it fuels my desire to identify solutions for the concerns expressed. I use others’ challenges to become teachable moments. As a result, I’ve redesigned our publishing packages around client needs.

“It’s hard getting lumped together with those who have deceptive practices but all the more reason to rise above the noise and show how you care about your authors. Predatory publishers are interested in the product and/or payment while legitimate hybrid publishers concern themselves with the person and their experience(s). Claire Aldin Publications offers personalized attention which keeps our authors coming back.”

In order to raise the bar for the books her company publishes, De’Andrea has found IBPA’s Industry Standards Checklist for a Professionally Published Book to be beneficial. “The checklist is great! It provides a quality standard of expectations that allows newer companies to produce a better product for their authors. One specific way it has helped Claire Aldin Publications was with ensuring we publish to industry standards. Our copyright page improved. Even the back covers improved—for example, previously, we did not include our logo on the back cover. These may seem like small issues, but these small issues created a big impact for our authors.”

Next in the pipeline, Claire Aldin Publications has a few different projects. In 2019, they have a tell-all memoir from author Emeline King, who is the first African-American female transportation designer for Ford Motor Company. Also in 2019, they have their first nonfiction book, The Surrendered Soul: Aligning the Five Parts of Your Soul with the Will of God. In addition, the publisher is working on a series of videos that will explain more of the book creation process to show how much hybrid publishers have to offer that authors may not currently know about.

Three Questions with Claire Aldin Publications’ President and Founder Dr. De’Andrea Matthews

IBPA: Can you briefly describe the history of how Claire Aldin Publications came to be?

De’Andrea Matthews (DM): Claire Aldin Publications started in July 2017. It was birthed from a God-given desire to provide services to first-time authors. When I was a first-time self-published author, I did things wrong. I was still learning a lot about the business. My company will save new authors time and resources so they don’t have to learn the hard way. The company’s name is a combination of my middle name and my husband’s middle name. He was my first client. My second client came a few months later and the rest is history. Within 18 months, we have published 14 authors.

IBPA: Can you list three key lessons you’ve learned about how one can succeed as an independent publisher?

DM: My three key lessons on how to succeed as an independent publisher will appear in an upcoming book chapter on Insights: The Proven Strategies for Success - How Entrepreneurs Thrive in the Modern World and How You Can, Too! They would be: knowledge, mentorship, and taking action. Professional development and mentorship, be it formal or informal, are great for the acquisition of knowledge, but if you never do anything with the knowledge you gain, how useful is it? You must take action. I strive to reduce the time between idea and implementation so prospective clients can benefit sooner from what I am learning and how the company continues to grow to meet their needs.

IBPA: How has it been beneficial to you to be a member of the Independent Book Publishers Association?

DM: There are great benefits for being a member of IBPA. For me, the best part has been connecting with like-minded individuals in the publishing industry. 2019 was my first year attending IBPA Publishing University, and it was a phenomenal experience. Investing in yourself is the best investment and you will get a great return on investment when you utilize what you gain.
