Dr. Judith Briles happily poses for a photo amongst some of her best-selling books.
IBPA Member Dr. Judith Briles has a busy month ahead of her! She is currently preparing to chair the annual AuthorU Extravaganza, taking place September 7-9 in Denver, CO. This year's event will have a heavy emphasis on book marketing and include workshops presented by over 20 publishing professionals. Dr. Briles is an award-winning author and veteran of the publishing industry, has been the president of several associations, and chaired multiple conferences. She writes The Book Shepherd segment for the newsletter and numerous columns, and leads her popular Publishing Salons. Her workshops for the upcoming conference include topics about how to bring in "super fans" and strategies to beat fatigue in a sometimes-overwhelming industry.

The promotional photo for Wheels of Wisdom shows Debbie Bishop on her bike, embracing the journey ahead.
Tim and Debbie Bishop of Open Road Press have recently been honored with a National Indie Excellence Award for their title Wheels of Wisdom: Life Lessons for the Restless Spirit. The Bishops tell the story of their bicycling adventures as midlife newlyweds and Hope Coaches, taking the reader on a journey across America. Along the way, they reflect on adopting the right mindset, overcoming obstacles, and relishing life's journey. “We feel honored to receive this award,” Debbie expresses, adding "We hope the award opens the door for more readers to discover the hope and inspiration that we share.”

Author Sam Chiarelli stands in the foreground of a larger-than-life dinosaur mural.

Hippocampus Magazine and Books has welcomed its first two authors to its imprint, Books by Hippocampus. The two titles already show a variety of content. Rebecca Fish Ewans' coming-of-age memoir, By the Forces of Gravity, is told through free verse and illustrations. Sam Chiarelli's book, tentatively titled Dig: A Personal Prehistoric Journey, tackles why human beings are so fascinated with dinosaurs, and follows Sam's cross-country Amtrak trip to a fossil dig. “We’re excited to share these two different journeys with our readers," says publisher Donna Talarico. "And we hope that this sets the stage for the variety in voices, structure, and themes that you’ll find with Books by Hippocampus.”

Halloween Holly author Cara Via.
Cara Via's debut children's book Halloween Holly - Santa's Helper has earned a Mom's Choice Award. The book tells the story of Holly, the holiday superhero who collects excess Halloween candy to deliver to Christmas elves while they work hard making presents. The idea cam to Via, a longtime Halloween enthusiast, after the sugar-overload of the season caused arguments, candy-sneaking, and meltdowns. Holly provides the perfect solution by teaching kids about sharing and generosity, while limiting the effects of bucketloads of candy (and saving a few teeth in the process!)
BAIPA board member, author and publishing expert, David Kudler.
IBPA affiliates Bay Area Independent Publishers Association (BAIPA) held a workshop last week focusing on ebooks, presented by board member David Kudler. "ebooks are arguably the most important format for independent publishers," the organization explained, "since we sell so many more of them than we do print books." Kudler noticed that their monthly Q&A sessions had become filled with questions regarding ebook creation, set-up, and sales. As a result, he decided to devote an entire day to sharing his knowledge of ebook publishing. The workshop began with a brief overview of ebooks as a medium, invited many questions from participants, and even included a hands-on afternoon workshop on the process of converting an ms into an ePub book.
