Granite Peak Publications' Beth and Janet Chapple take a photo during a visit to Yellowstone National Park.

Through Early Yellowstone: Adventuring by Bicycle, Covered Wagon, Foot, Horseback, and Skis, published by Granite Peak Publications, has won an honorable mention from Foreword Reviews' INDIES Book of the Year Awards. “Being a Foreword INDIES winner is a big deal: in a year with a record number of entries, [the] book was selected by our editors as a finalist, then judged as a top pick by the librarian and bookseller assigned to [the travel] category,” wrote Michele Lonoconus, awards director of Foreword Reviews. The anthology was collected and edited by Granite Peak's mother-daughter team Janet and Beth Chapple. It delves into adventure stories, many previously published, and includes rare art collected through years of research.

Author Steven Schindler displays his grand prize.

The New York Book Festival has named Steven Schindler the 2017 Grand Prize winner for his novel, The Last Sewer Ball. Published by The Elevated Press, the book follows Vinny and his search for his childhood best friend. But after decades apart, long-standing secrets threaten to rise to the surface. The festival's panel of judges hailed the title, saying "Schindler’s masterful eye for New York details and his deft dialog make this a novel that true New Yorkers must read."

FAPA board members pose for a photo during the workshop.

IBPA affiliate association, the Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA), conducted a half-day publishing workshop in partnership with the Amelia Island Book Festival on Saturday, June 17. The workshop had a broad focus, covering trade secrets across genres, the inner workings of successful cover design, and strategies for promotion and sales. Attendees found it to be "a great networking opportunity", and the event raised over $1,350, which will be used to purchase books for schools in Nassau County. FAPA, who welcomed multiple new members after the event, plans to continue offering regional workshops throughout the state.

Award-winning indie author Alysson Foti Bourque.

Alysson Foti Bourque has been invited to be a featured author at both the Louisiana Book Festival and Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, TN. Her award-winning Alycat Series "encourages readers to celebrate the joy, innocence, and fearlessness of being a kid, while learning a valuable lesson in the end." Alycat and the Thursday Dessert Day, the first of the series, was honored with both a Mom's Choice Award and an IBPA Benjamin Franklin Digital Silver Award. Look out for the second book in the series, Alycat and the Monday Blues, which will be released on September 9th, 2017.

Brooke Warner is an author, editor, and independent publisher.

Brooke Warner, publisher at both She Writes Press and SparkPress, has written a feature for Independent Publisher. The article, titled "The Art and Effort Behind Beautiful Cover Designs," delves into common mistakes that can dramatically affect book sales. The advice includes everything from editorial rules (like never including "by" in front of the author name), to hiring a designer with the right knowledge and experience. "[Many industry professionals] will write a book off for looking amateur based on cover design alone," explains Brooke. "It matters a great deal that your book stand proud alongside any other published book—and better yet if it stands out and makes a reader say, 'Wow, I love this cover.'”
