The candidates were picked from a list of fourteen new applicants and five incumbents gathered during IBPA’s open application period (November 15, 2016 through December 31, 2016).

IBPA members can expect to see the seven candidates on the Board Ballot for IBPA membership vote during the April 8, 2017 Annual Membership Meeting scheduled during IBPA's Publishing University in Portland, Oregon. Each candidate is slated to serve a two-year term starting July 1, 2017.

The candidates are:

  • Ian Lamont (incumbent), Founder, i30 Media Corporation
  • Richard-Anthony Lena, Founder, Brattle Publishing Group

“All the incumbent and new Board member candidates embody IBPA’s Core Values of Service, Leadership, and Independence,” said Angela Bole, IBPA’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’re extremely grateful for their commitment to work alongside the staff to help lead and serve the independent publishing community through education, advocacy, and tools for success.”

Before being placed on the list above, the candidates went through a months-long application process led by IBPA’s Board Nominating Committee. As part of the process, the Board Nominating Committee reviewed written applications before settling on a short list of candidates for verbal interviews. Impressions from both the written application and verbal interview rounds were discussed by the Board Nominating Committee prior to settling on the final list of recommended candidates. More about the Board Nominating Committee’s process can be found in this Briefing Memo from January 2017.

Members of the Board Nominating Committee included the following previous members of the IBPA Board of Directors: Janice Butler (Lightning Source), Rana DiOrio (March 4th, Inc.), Tom Doherty (Blue River Press & Cardinal Publishers Group), Kelly Gallagher (Ingram Content Group), Christopher Robbins (Familus & American West Books), and Marcella Smith (Marcella Smith Associates).

During her tenure, the company’s revenue has grown by nearly 80%, a fact Elizabeth attributes to the small press’ mission of “bringing to light meaningful books.” When she’s not editing, Elizabeth is passionate about advocating for independent authors and serves on the board of the Independent Book Publishers Association. She was named a Publisher’s Weekly Star Watch 2016 honoree and is a founding member of Read Local NC, which seeks to promote a healthy literary ecosystem in North Carolina. Elizabeth holds a BA in Spanish from Wake Forest University and an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Florida International University. She lives on a budding farm in Hillsborough, NC with her husband and a handful of critters.

Mark Wesley (aka "Wesley"), Owner, me+mi publishing
Wesley has been helping clients succeed and create value for their customers. From creating products that have sold over $240 million in the first year, to creating the number one children’s dual language book series, to having products in every major retail store and warehouse club, to producing over 20 books that have sold between 30,000 to over a 50,000 units each year. Wesley has been through many frustrations, obstacles, failures and victories, and his goal is to share what he has learned along the way. As Phil Cooke says, “I am not a travel agent, who gives you the brochure. I am a tour guide who’s actually been there before.”
