Why Join IBPA?
IBPA membership helps strengthen the influence and reach of the independent publishing profession, giving a voice to your concerns across the nation. At the same time, IBPA provides you with opportunities to learn,
network, market your books, and grow your business, thereby boosting
your success and raising the overall profession of independent publishing to new heights.
According to IBPA's approved bylaws, IBPA supports two classes of voting membership known as Publisher Class and Publisher Partner Class. IBPA also supports a class
of non-voting membership known as the Associate Class.
A NOTE FOR PUBLISHERS FROM OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES:
IBPA aims its programs and educational opportunities at the U.S. book publishing market. We welcome publisher members from both within and outside the U.S. who are interested in participating in and/or learning more about this market, but must charge
international members an additional fee of $50 to cover the cost of serving international accounts (members registering from Canada will not be charged a fee). This covers the cost of postage, shipping, long distance fees, and other additional costs
needed to serve international members. This fee is automatically added at checkout to the cost of membership listed below when international members sign up.
Voting Member Types
Publisher Class
The Publisher Class consists of Independent Publishers and Author Publishers whose qualifications are as follows:
- Independent Publisher: Persons or organizations involved in publishing other people’s work using a traditional, royalty-based publishing model (i.e., Trade Publisher)
and/or an author-subsidized publishing model (i.e., Hybrid Publisher).
- An Independent Publisher is defined as one not operated by a major publishing house (e.g. one of the “Big Five”) and its imprints.
- An Independent Publisher might also publish their own work.
- If an Independent Publisher is a Hybrid Publisher, it must adhere to all 11-points of IBPA's Hybrid Publisher Criteria. If the
company doesn't adhere to all 11-points, it should join IBPA at the PUBLISHER PARTNER Class (see below).
|
|
- Author Publisher (aka Self-Published Author): Persons who exclusively publish their own work, e.g., self-published author.
|
Publisher Partner Class
- 1-9 employees = $220 per year
- 10-99 employees = $500 per year
- 100+ employees = $700 per year
The Publisher Partner Class consists of vendors whose qualifications are as follows:
- Publisher Partner: Persons or organizations involved with supplying services or products to the field of independent publishing, including printers, book designers,
consultants, booksellers, distributors, wholesalers, and other industry vendors.

A Publisher Partner membership includes a free listing in IBPA's Supplier & Services Discovery Database and the opportunity to apply to be an official IBPA Member Benefit Provider.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR POTENTIAL MEMBERS WHO PROVIDE SERVICES (Publisher Partners, Hybrid Publishers, etc.): It is a violation of IBPA Community Guidelines for members to contact other members (texts, emails, phone calls, and so on) to promote their services. For example, Publisher Partners are NOT permitted to search through the IBPA Member Directory and email, call, message, etc. other members
to solicit their services to them.
IBPA understands that the IBPA community is a great place to promote publishing-related services, which is why we’ve created multiple opportunities to promote your services to IBPA members. You can view this page to see all of those promotional opportunities.
In addition, our members may offer
IBPA's marketing programs to their clients, but they MUST charge the exact rate that IBPA charges for the program. For example, if IBPA charges $299
for a 3-month NetGalley listing, then the IBPA member can only charge their client $299 for a 3-month NetGalley listing.
As for other member benefits, such as IngramSpark, Bowker, etc., IBPA does not want our members sharing our promo codes, members-only hyperlinks, etc. with non-members. These member benefits are intended solely for the purpose of members. If the
clients of Publisher Partners are in need of access to IngramSpark, Bowker, etc., then we prefer that they suggest their clients sign up for membership themselves. A violation of these policies can result in removal from membership.
Non-Voting Member Types
Associate Class
The Associate Class consists of Future Publishers, Authors, and Publisher Friends whose qualifications are as follows:
- Future Publisher: Persons or organizations considering or preparing to publish their own or other people’s work.
|

|
|
- Publisher Friend: Persons not directly involved in publishing, but who support independent publishing.
|
