Digital Narration for Audiobooks: What Publishers Need to Know https://www.ibpa-online.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1826266 https://www.ibpa-online.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1826266

IBPA PubU Online: "Digital Narration for Audiobooks: What Publishers Need to Know"

WHAT TO EXPECT: Digital narration is here. It won't replace human narrators for every book, but it will be used particularly for backlist and for titles that wouldn't otherwise make it to audio. Publishing expert Kelly Peterson helps publishers assess the different platforms and creation tools, as well as issues regarding pricing, distribution, and transparency for consumers.

COST: FREE for IBPA members

Kelly Peterson
About the Webinar

A human narrator can deliver a premium audiobook experience—no argument. But most publishers can't afford to make every frontlist title (let alone all their backlist books) a premium audiobook.

That's where digital narration might come in, creating a "good-enough" audiobook experience that delivers your book as audio content—making it accessible in a format more and more readers expect and want to use.

Before you jump in, there's lots to consider, including:

  • The current state-of-the-art for creating digital audiobooks for platforms (including Amazon, Apple, and Google), with both in-platform tools and 3rd party tools like Speechki.
  • How and where you create your digitally-narrated audiobook impacts where you can sell it.
  • Pricing differentiation for human narrated audiobooks vs. digitally-narrated audiobooks.
  • Ethical considerations (are the humans who digitized their voices being compensated for the digital narration of books?)
  • Is your marketing (and the way your digitally narrated audiobooks are sold) clear about what consumers will be getting?

As we head into the future intersection of technology and independent publishing, this is a must-attend session!

Each 1-hour IBPA PubU Online webinar is followed by an optional half-hour community discussion.

Please note IBPA does not permit recording of this meeting or webinar via AI technology or other method. As a membership association, these events are intended to be safe spaces, and should not be recorded unless by IBPA staff with a notification to everyone participating.

THIS MONTH'S MAIN TOPIC: LUCRATIVE ALTERNATIVE REVENUE STREAMS FOR PUBLISHERS

There are many ways that publishers can generate revenue other than selling books through traditional trade channels. If done well, these other revenue streams can be quite lucrative.

Come to the Roundtable to share how you've expanded your business beyond trade book markets and what has and has not worked for you. If you haven't pursued any of these avenues, come with your questions and learn from your publishing peers.

The more indie publishers work together, the more successful we'll all be!

Below are some of the topics we’ll be discussing:

  • licensing out the international rights to your books
  • Producing audiobooks
  • Selling film/television rights
  • Selling merchandise related to your books or brand
  • And more!

IBPA is presenting a new format for the Member Roundtables in 2024!

The IBPA community is rich with members who operate on a variety of business models and have unique needs for running their companies. To best serve our membership, we’re creating two separate monthly Roundtables: an Independent Publisher Roundtable and an Author Publisher Roundtable.

By creating two distinct groups, the roundtables will more specifically and effectively address the challenges that publishers face based on their business type and experience.

These Roundtables are open-forum discussions for IBPA members interested in networking with others to share strategies and experiences that will enhance their businesses and lead to success. They’re also a place to connect with publishing peers on shared industry challenges and work together on finding solutions. Learn from your fellow publishers without having to leave the comfort of your own surroundings!

Other Member Types:

If you’re an Independent Publisher member, the Independent Publisher Roundtable is a better fit for you, so you should visit this page to register for those instead.

If you’re a Publisher Partner, you’re welcome to attend both Roundtables to contribute to the conversation. When deciding whether to attend, though, we ask that you think about how your services are applicable to this group and the main topic, and as always, please keep in mind that these spaces are not for service providers to promote their services. IBPA has many advantageous advertising and sponsorship opportunities to reach your audience that we’re happy to offer you.

THIS MONTH'S MAIN TOPIC: BEST SELF-PUBLISHING PATHWAYS TO FIND YOUR PUBLISHING TEAM

There are many ways that author publishers can publish their books: hire freelancers; go through an all-in-one publishing service provider; and more. Perhaps you’ve never published a book, and need to know where to start? Perhaps you’ve already published books, but are looking for new avenues? There are a lot of factors to consider, so come to this Roundtable prepared to discuss the various pathways that author publishers can take to publish their books.

The more author publishers work together, the more successful we'll all be!

Below are some of the topics we’ll be discussing:

  • The multiple pathways an author publisher can take to publishing their books
  • The pros and cons of those various pathways
  • Places where you can find all-in-one publishing service providers and freelancers to add them to your publishing team
  • Best practices every author publisher should adopt when publishing a book
  • And more!

THIS MONTH'S MAIN TOPIC: ALL THINGS BOOK DISTRIBUTION

One of the topics that most profoundly impacts an independent publishers’ ability to be successful is book distribution. How do you land traditional distribution? If you already have traditional distribution, how do you make the most of it? How can you better understand forecasting? Where should you upload your books for wholesale distribution?

Come to the Roundtable prepared to share what has and hasn’t worked for you regarding distribution!

*What is traditional distribution? Traditional distribution is when you work with a full-service distributor who not only manages your inventory and order fulfillment, but also employs sales reps who will actively sell your catalog of new and backlist titles to retail and specialty stores. These sales reps are responsible for actively pitching a publishers’ titles to buyers.

To clarify further, if you post your books through a platform like IngramSpark, BookBaby, and so on, that is not "traditional distribution." Those platforms can make your books available to wholesale for retailers, but there isn't a dedicated sales force that actively promotes your titles to those markets. You can read more about traditional distribution on this page.

For more information about distribution in general, you should also check out IBPA’s helpful Distribution Resource Center.

About the Program

THIS MONTH'S MAIN TOPIC: ALL THINGS BOOK DISTRIBUTION

One of the topics that most profoundly impacts an author publishers’ ability to be successful is book distribution. Where should you upload your books for wholesale distribution? Why is it important to post your book to more retailers than just Amazon? Is it possible for author publishers to land traditional distribution*?
