IBPA CANCELS 2020 FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR PARTICIPATION
(Manhattan Beach, CA - July 1, 2020) -- The Frankfurt Book Fair is an important event in the global publishing calendar, one the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) has been attending in support of its diverse membership since the mid-1980s.
After carefully reflecting on the current situation related to COVID-19 and taking into consideration the health and safety of its employees and members, IBPA decided during a June 24, 2020 board of directors meeting that the association will not exhibit at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2020. Separately, and unrelated to the IBPA board of directors decision, the following IBPA booth partner also decided not to exhibit in 2020:
- Independent Publishers Group
- J. Ross Publishing
- Lerner Publishing
- Llewellyn Worldwide
- New Harbinger Publications
- PSI/Publishers’ Services International
- Trafalgar Square Books
- Turner Publishing.
As of July 1st, IBPA is following with great interest the virtual and digital solutions which are being developed by Frankfurt Book Fair to provide new ways of connecting and working with the global publishing community.
According to Thomas Minkus, VP Emerging Media & English Language Markets for the Frankfurt Book Fair:
"The Frankfurter Buchmesse is most importantly a platform for publishing. Our primary goal is to create the most valuable opportunities for our international community to engage with each other and with the public. We completely understand and respect that many people are uncomfortable about participating in a large event right now. That is why we are offering several choices to our exhibitors and visitors as to how they can participate in the fair this year.
"First, we are offering 100% refunds to exhibitors who choose to cancel their stands. Second, we are creating new on-site participation options—like workstations and tables—that will allow companies to decide last-minute, and based on the changing health situation, whether to attend the fair in person. And third, for those who choose to participate virtually, we are developing an online offering that will enable people to meet, network, attend virtual events, and buy and sell rights.
"Our commitment to supporting the global book business is unwavering. This will be a hard year financially for the fair and for many in the publishing industry, and we are doing everything we can to create more opportunities to keep meaningful business going in this challenging environment."
Anyone with questions about IBPA's cancellation of in-person participation at the Frankfurt Book Fair, or ideas on how IBPA can support the independent publishing community’s foreign rights needs, is invited to contact IBPA chief operations officer Terry Nathan at email@example.com.

Boasting over 7,000 exhibitors and 275,000 visitors each year, the Frankfurt Book Fair is the largest global marketplace for books, media, rights, and licenses worldwide. 2019 marks IBPA’s 34th year at the Fair and we couldn’t be prouder.
Many IBPA members have achieved great success through IBPA’s support of their participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair and can now boast Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, and French versions of their titles.
IBPA supports member titles at the Frankfurt Book Fair in a few different ways. Most IBPA members purchase single-title display ($185/title) in our cooperative booth. In addition to onsite book display, those who sign up for single-title display and meet the submission deadline are added to our onsite book catalog, which includes book title, ISBN, price, cover art, company name, and website. Larger companies can purchase full-shelf display ($750/shelf, including dedicated company signage) to accommodate 4-5 books along with catalogs or sell sheets. And even larger companies can opt for their own 10x10 booth rental (email Terry Nathan for booth rental information).
2020 marks IBPA’s 35th year at the Fair and we have a list of more than 600 international contacts with whom we request meetings in order to make contacts for you to license your rights throughout the world. We hope you'll join us!
