"Three Years To Launch: A Step By Step Guide to Starting an Indie Publishing House"
With 25 years of experience in publishing, the Hard Work Publishing team started work on their new company in 2017. Their first title was released in 2020. Learn what they did to set themselves up for success.
About the Program
Mike Middleton came in on the ground floor to help set up Hard Work Publishing, and in three years helped the brand-new traditional publishing company get set up, find distribution, and launch their first title.
What does it mean to publish a book? It’s not just printing.
This session will cover:
- Doing your research
- Assuring editorial quality (editing and beta readers)
- Setting up distribution
- Figuring out print runs (and book length)
- Knowing your lane and audience
- Being strategic about acquisitions
- Structuring programs (discounts, returns, shipping) to make bookstores happy
- Building relationships with bookstores
- Figuring out how to make money
It’s a step by step case study to starting an indie publishing house – and a guide to starting yours. Join Mike in this IBPA PubU Online webinar to find out how to start out right – or, if you’ve already started, how to get onto a better track!
About the Presenter
Hard Work Publishing is an American book publishing company that was created in 2017. Michael Middleton worked as an adviser to Martha Cole, the Publisher, and her staff to assist in creating the company. Martha has more than twenty-five years of experience in the industry serving principally as an editor. As an author, Mike wrote COP: A True Story (which sold 85,000 copies) and Medal of Valor Firefighters. Together they defined Hard Work Publishing’s path: to create a positive working relationship with authors and book stores. Hard Work Publishing’s wholesale book distributor is Bookazine, and they released their first book, Elusive Demons, on May 1, 2020.
