Member News: April 2017

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at the 29th annual Publishing University earlier this month up in Portland. The event was a great success in spite of the weather challenges many of us faced along the way. We were thrilled to see so many members of our incredible community attend the event. The breakout sessions covered a wide variety of topics and our speakers made the conference educational and fun. A highlight of the event each year is the Benjamin Franklin awards ceremony where we celebrate the best in independent publishing for books published during the previous calendar year. Have a look at the full list of winners here and check out photos from the evening here.

Award-winning author and artist Roz Maclean.
“EveryBODY deserves recognition, respect and love.” This is the theme of Roz Maclean's award-winning children's book The Body Book. After receiving accolades for the book, Maclean uploaded a companion video called “I Love the Shape of Me.” The video is animated by Dario Scaramuzza, with vocals by Corinne Hansen. The song and music video is about helping kids learn to love their bodies the way that they are and promotes body diversity and acceptance. Maclean describes her artistic motivation on her website: “I believe that art is many things- an opportunity for unlimited choice, voice and communication, activism, investigation, storytelling, contemplation, therapy...” The Body Book recently received a Benjamin Franklin Gold Award in the category of Children’s Picture Book (0 – 3 years).

Peter Baron is an author, publisher, speaker, and agent.
Literary agent and publishing consultant, Peter Beren, has recently arranged for the re-publication of Clifford Slapper's Bowie's Piano Man. The revision includes six new chapters and will be available in North America for the first time. The book details the story of Mike Garson and David Bowie's 45-year creative friendship, which continued through nine world tours, twenty albums, and nine hundred-sixty one live performances. This release is one of many projects that Beren is involved in. He has written or co-written seven books, including The Writers Legal Companion.

Author and illustrator Corinne Humphrey with her beloved dog Rudy.
Corinne Humphrey's Roaming with Rudy, a kid's travel guide series published by Sage Press, has received a 2016 Silver Moonbeam Children's Book Award for Best Series as well as a Bronze Moonbeam award for the animated, audio e-book for Roaming with Rudy, Paris! Their success has continued, and recently another book from the series Roaming with Rudy, Washington, DC! has been announced as a finalist for the 2016 Foreward Indies Book Awards. Humphrey's inspiration for the book came after she adopted a dog, Rudy. “...The knowledgeable staff [at the shelter] convinced me to give him a chance," Humphrey explains "and I took him home on a ‘trial.’ We’ve been fast friends ever since.”
