“I want to lift up the voices of those who may not otherwise be heard, whether because their voice is too new (or radical), censorship, remote access, or language barriers. “
Why did you become a book publisher? The best way to promote peace and understanding between people of different languages, cultures, and geographies is through access. I want to lift up the voices of those who may not otherwise be heard, whether because their voice is too new (or radical), censorship, remote access, or language barriers.
What do you like best about publishing? The thrill of helping a brilliant writer get heard (read) by others who otherwise might not have come across that voice or those ideas.
What do you publish? Literary fiction, philosophy, world literature.
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? Direct, via email, and word of mouth.
How do you define a successful title? Arresting vocabulary that makes you stop in the aisles. Words that form a poem unto themselves.
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. Gambit: Newer African Writing is our first published book and it is unlike any other on the market. It features interviews AND original short fiction of nine writers from five different African countries - Nigeria, Malawi, Somalia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? I'll let you know when I get there. I am learning all of this from scratch...
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? I AM a newcomer! I welcome the advice of those who have come before me. (please!)
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? I would like to be publishing 5 - 10 titles per year featuring authors from around the world. I would like our press to be recognized as relevant, imaginative, and influential in the world literature space.
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? I read, of course! I live in New York City - there's something fun around every corner.
