“I love writing books. I’m never happier than when immersed in my characters leading me along. “
Why did you become a book publisher? I felt it was the most direct path to get my books out there.
What do you like best about publishing? I love writing the books. I'm never happier than when immersed in my characters leading me along. Publishing? A necessity for finding readers.
What do you publish? Currently a Christian historical novel/romance.
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? I read everything on the subject. I try to do five things toward publicity every day. Right now, I'm trying to find readers before the fact for my novel, Martha's Sister.
How do you define a successful title? To entertain, to arouse feelings in the reader, and to make money.
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. Escape from the Prison System: Finding the Narrow Door still makes me cry whenever I read it. It carries short stories of prisoner salvations--all kinds of criminals turning into good citizens with productive lives. One was deemed with no redeeming social value by a social worker. My current title in the works: Martha's Sister--The Harlot, the Homemaker and the Man Called from the Grave. It's taken from the story of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in the Bible.
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? Being an introvert. No way can I walk up to a stranger and start a conversation about my books. I look as scared as I feel. Most of my publicity is online.
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Don't expect quick results. It can take years.
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? I plan for today and the next two years (maybe). Martha's Sister will be out and be a huge success.
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? I enjoy reading, logic puzzles, nerdy things like parades (especially marching bands--takes me back to the days when I was in them). I enjoy eating out.
