“It’s extremely satisfying to see the finished product: a beautiful book full of helpful info or humorous stories that many people will see/read/enjoy.”
Why did you become a book publisher? I wanted to have control over my book (silly me!). I had no idea how much I had to learn to turn a word doc into a nicely put together, bound book.
What do you like best about publishing? It's extremely satisfying to see the finished product: a beautiful book full of helpful info or humorous stories that many people will see/read/enjoy.
What do you publish? Self-help, health & fitness, spiritual.
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? Word of mouth, so far. I haven't got much marketing done, as I am still in the throes of getting the print/cover finished. But people telling other people they like the book is the most helpful so far.
How do you define a successful title? A successful title moves people. They talk about it, write about it, do or see themselves or the world differently because of reading it. Of course big sales are helpful too!
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. I only have one title thus far, Love Yourself Fit. I am proud of this book because it has the possibility of moving people. It offers a different, enjoyable solution to the body-weight-fitness thing so many of us struggle with. It's a how-to stop struggling and make it fun, easy and long-lasting for women. Properly absorbed, it's a life shifter (changed my life). But my pride comes from sticking with it. I started to write it 15 years ago, and only now I am completing publication. Marriage, kids, house remodels, PTA, and a long publishing road haven't stopped me from producing it a real book!
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? Being new to the publishing world--having publishing be a 2nd career to being a full time mom has been the toughest aspect for me. I don't have the time those that work in offices or have 8-10 hrs a day to make something happen. I have 4 hours, 4 days a week without kids...that's tough!
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Patience. It takes time to produce a quality product and have the world notice it.
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? I have a couple more books I want to write and publish, and I already have friends and business acquaintances asking me for direction and advice on getting their ideas and stories in print. I would like to help steer others navigate this road because I have made so many mistakes publishing my first book and literally stumbled through the publishing process. I will be publishing more books, just more smoothly I hope!
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? I am an active mom, so playing w/ my husband and kids is #1. We like to camp and read or watch stories together, hike or go to the beach. I really enjoy deep conversations with girlfriends or being in a learning environment (lectures). If I had time I would volunteer at an animal shelter--love dogs & horses. I love to workout (weird, I know), massage and food & wine. Hugs are good too.
