Why did you become a book publisher? I became a publisher through the experience of an author-friend of mine, Meredith Smith. Meredith's experiences with the current publishing industry left her feeling as though her art was simply a product for sale. The publishing company she initially contracted with did not explain the contract to her nor was she educated on how she could build an audience and the publisher subsequently made more money on her book than she did. Meredith's question to me was 'how can a second best-seller reap only pennies for me?' Thus, Kal-Ba was born. Our collaboration created a publishing company that treats authors with the respect they deserve and budding authors with the mentoring they need to understand the process.

What do you like best about publishing? I love to learn and thrive when I am able to put my talents to work. Publishing has given me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Of course, it has had its challenges but that is part of the joy. I enjoy learning new information from the writers that I come in contact with and learn something new all of the time. I believe there is wisdom in everyone, share it with us! It truly is a collaboration.

What do you publish? Mind, Body, Spirit, Paranormal, new and ancient mysteries, alternative healing, para-dreaming, anything that will assist some in conscious awakening

What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? Kal-Ba is listed with writing and publishing resources We keep the energy of Kal-Ba flowing with Facebook, Linked-in, Google+, Pinterest and Twitter. Kal-Ba promotes a blog contest weekly seeking budding and aspiring writers and encouraging them to become more confident with their messages. Inspirited Inspirations posted weekly has put Kal-Ba on the map with authors seeking a conscious publishing company. Once a week, Kal-Ba writes a blog relating to the challenges of being an author. The blogs can be instructional, inspirational, or utilized to challenge the author to grow and expand their awareness of the industry.

How do you define a successful title? A successful title will fully embody the message in the book. It will be what catches the attention of their intended audience. Personally, I have purchased books based on a title and found that the book wasn't about the title at all. I feel that although it may have been unintentional, it is misleading to a reader and can be interpreted as deceptive and the author will suffer from that reputation.

Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. Dreamworkers Behind the Veil; Nightshift Dreams is one of the best books on dreaming that I have had the opportunity to read. It takes dream interpretation to a new level of awareness that, to date, I have not experienced. Since reading this book, I have been more aware of what is happening with our soul during a dream sequence. The author is truly a pioneer in the field of dream research and challenges the current dreaming paradigm.

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? Learning. Not just learning the technical side of publishing but learning patience, perseverance, and enduring discouragement. Discouragement has cost many a business the opportunity to thrive when given up on too quickly. Learning to accept the ups-and-downs of publishing as being a normal part of any process or endeavor. Sometimes I run into an area where I am challenged through lack of knowledge; rather than give-up I choose to learn and accept mistakes as learning mechanisms. Other times it is understanding writers have choices and standing firm with our vision despite the possibility that an author will choose to move on.

What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Be patient and confident in your vision. There is no reason to change your vision in order to appeal to an author just so you can publish their book. Every publishing company has a place in the market so be a conscious contributor through positive interactions with the authors even when you have to accept they may not be your customer.

How will you and your company be positioned in five years? Kal-Ba sees themselves as a legacy and can leave their mark on the publishing industry by carving a new and conscious path for other publishing companies to aspire to. We seek to be on the level of larger publishing companies: creating a magazine publication; employing more editors, agents and writers; becoming the primary voice for what is considered now to be 'fringe' authors.

When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? I have a radio show called Soul Revolution Radio on the blogtalk network. I love interviewing individuals from all kinds of alternative spiritual and healing paths as I learn so much from all of them. I have always been a very inquisitive person and didn't have the luxury of the current technology in order to relieve my needs for knowledge. Soul Revolution was born of that need. I love to write about my learning experiences or about concepts that are foreign to many. I decided to write for HubPages to practice and will one day publish a book of my own. I love to cook various foods, especially learning alternative recipes that replace refined sugars. I am a nut for sweets but would rather try and be more healthy around it. I ride a motorcycle with my husband and love the air flowing around me and hearing all the noises in nature.
