“Publishing is a cooperative process that requires the collaboration of publisher and author. “
Why did you become a book publisher? I had a background in writing and editing and I was interested in providing an outlet for writers who might not be published in other venues. Our first interest was in giving a venue for Jewish women writers, and we have expanded to give voice to Judeo-Spanish subjects, spirituality, and others.
What do you like best about publishing? The contact with writers and facilitating the development of their manuscripts into publishable form.
What do you publish? Jewish themes.
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? A combination of e-mail marketing and print advertising has proven to be very effective for us. Organizing author events is especially good.
How do you define a successful title? A combination of critical recognition and sales.
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. The Power of the Hebrew Alphabet is the title of which we are most proud. It recently won the Best Religious Book of 2014 from the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards, and we have continuing laudatory comments from reviewers and readers. It is a book about the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each letter has a set of meanings associated with it, and this book explains those meanings using a combination of visual images and commentary. The 230 color images are stunning. It is an art book complete with meanings, so that each page is full of possibilities for contemplation and meditation on the significance of life and spiritual experience. Although it draws from the tradition of Jewish thought, it is equally compelling for people of Christian and other religious backgrounds.
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? Time and contacts.
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Stay with it. Persistence is critical. Focus on good manuscripts and authors who are committed to following through with their book after it is published. Publishing is a cooperative process that requires the collaboration of publisher and author.
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? In the first ten years we have gained critical recognition nationally in the United States and other English speaking countries and a reliable economic base, and in the next five years I see us moving more into the digital world and continuing print publishing in key genres.
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? Movies, reading, time with friends and family, landscaping, skiing. Life is good.
