“I most enjoy the actual creation of books–the editing and fitting words and pictures. I love being instrumental in helping authors and illustrators achieve their dreams.”

Why did you become a book publisher? After being told by an agent that my novel was “good and very funny,” but that she wouldn't represent it, I decided to publish it myself. Not long after, a friend had a great idea for a children's book and asked me to help her publish. Before long, I had published several more.

What do you like best about publishing? I most enjoy the actual creation of books--the editing and fitting words and pictures. I love being instrumental in helping authors and illustrators achieve their dreams.

What do you publish? Family friendly fiction and educational children's books

What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? So far, it's been Facebook.

How do you define a successful title? I have several benchmarks: sales over 100 units, a heartfelt review and/or any international sale.

Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. My Peace Place, co authored with Lori Bortnick. The book wasn't written specifically for children with disabilities, but the parent of a child with Autism gave a lovely review stating that it had helped her daughter. Score!

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? Marketing. Hate doing it and haven't done it well.

What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Most "overnight successes" don't happen overnight. Be prepared for the long haul and recognize that you will always need to learn more.

How will you and your company be positioned in five years? I'll have books in schools in every state and US territory. Librarians will recognize the Flying Turtle Publishing brand.

When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? Reading, writing and playing in the dirt. My garden always surprises me.
