“Self-publishing isn’t second-best choice. It can be the BEST choice you’ve ever made.”
Why did you become a book publisher? A decision to self-publish is a decision to become a book publisher. I spent a long time selecting a name for my publishing company. I wanted a name that would make it easy to develop a matching logo. As a bird-watcher, it was an easy jump to Flying Heron Books.
What do you like best about publishing? My first book will probably be published in January. What I like so far about publishing is being in charge. I get to decide what my cover looks like and then change it when I get a better idea. I also am able to get the book published in less time and hopefully will earn more. Sure, it's a risk, but it's exciting.
What do you publish? Straight A's Are Not Enough: Breakthroughs in Learning for College Students
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? My plans include suggesting the book as a gift for high school graduation if the student plans to go to college. I will also suggests that sponsors of college scholarships give each of their winners a copy.
How do you define a successful title? Short Enough - Makes the subject clear - MEMORABLE
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. Straight A's Are Not Enough - to be published in early next year - is a different kind of study skills book. Instead of telling students how to get straight A's, this book is about getting a great education. Too many students who make good grades study for tests and soon forget much of what they "learned." That isn't getting a great education. As well as many practical strategies the book is filled with exciting recent research on the brain and how we learn most effectively, stories, and personal experiences. It's the kind of book that students will enjoy reading and it might just change lives.
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? The biggest challenge was giving up on agents and getting published by a big company and finally realizing that I was GLAD they all said no. Self-publishing is the smartest choice I could possibly have made.
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? Self-publishing isn't second-best choice. It can be the BEST choice you've ever made.
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? I will have published a similar book for high school students, a mystery that is waiting for me to revise it, a short story that needs to be an e-book and most of all, Straight A's Are Not Enough will have sold more than any other study skills book and be well on it's way to half a million sales.
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? My husband and I enjoy traveling and bird watching. In the last several years we looked at birds in Costa Rica, Argentina, Antarctica, Kenya, and Thailand. The next trip will be India and Bhutan.
