“The only advice that I’d offer newcomers to book publishing is to pray, stay motivated, and keep pushing forward. Negativity cannot touch you if it can’t catch you.”
Why did you become a book publisher? I created BTLB because I was tired of being rejected by subjective agents that didn't want to take a chance on my own writing. Initially, I decided to use my BAS in Business to find a publishing path to get my books into the market, however, I found that there were many other author, poets, and illustrators who needed a path as well. It has been my reward to help them develop and create their dreams.
What do you like best about publishing? I love seeing ideas develop into a book that you can hold in your hand. I also feel like I'm using my special skills to help others find their way through obstacles to have their dreams completed into published works of art.
What do you publish? We publish everything at BTLB except erotica.
What is the most effective form of marketing for your press? I've been a successful consultant in my lifetime, so I've been able to find several form of marketing to the public. Social media and word of mouth are two of the strongest forms marketing, as well as, networking with like-minded individuals who don't see someone in the same business as competition but as a partner.
How do you define a successful title? I define a successful title as one that reaches over 500 downloads in one day. Also, if it's reviewed more than five times, I'd say that it was successful because one review is difficult to come by now.
Tell us about one of your titles about which you are especially proud. I'm especially proud of my entire Victoria's Journey series. There are three books currently published, Victoria's Beginning, Victoria's Choice, and Joy, of which Victoria's Beginning is an Amazon bestseller. The final book, The Legacy, releases May 9th, and we are going to celebrate it in Garland with an official red carpet event, "At Journey's End".
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving success? The biggest challenge in achieving success has been staying positive and motivated in the face of the initial rejections, negativity from other small press publishers, family, and friends, and not becoming overwhelmed by the business side.
What advice do you have for newcomers to book publishing? The only advice that I'd offer newcomers to book publishing is to pray, stay motivated, and keep pushing forward. Negativity cannot touch you if it can't catch you.
How will you and your company be positioned in five years? In five years, BTLB will be positioned as a dominant small press that will make bigger presses take notice and example of our operations. We will be the positive light in the darkness for those who are ready to take steps to find their dreams of writing.
When you're not fully immersed in publishing, what do you do for fun? I love to spend time with my diverse and blended family, my husband, Zach, and our six blended children, Angelise, Austin, Alacea, Hunter, Andrew, and Ariane. I also cook, play and teach clarinet, and apply my time to earning my Master's degree in Professional Development to help my BTLB authors reach their potential.
