Responding to Changes and Challenges

I recently gave the “State of the Association” address at our annual meeting, held during Publishing University 2010 in New York. I want to share what I said with those who were not in attendance.

I began by quoting Linda Crompton, president and CEO of BoardSource, an organization that works to help build exceptional nonprofit boards. In an article published in the November/December 2009 BoardSource newsletter, Linda said: “Though the economy may be stabilizing, there is no going back to business as usual for the non-profit sector. Going forward requires us to envision a different future for our organizations. But only those boards that are willing to transform themselves will succeed in transforming their organizations.”

Linda was speaking in response to the instability of our economy. Now add to that some of the changes in the publishing industry over the past several years:

• the emergence of the digital world and how it changes the ways people read content

• the growing trend toward social media marketing and how it changes the ways we

publicize our books
