New PMA Board Member Appointed

Nominated to fill the University Press chair vacated by Don Ellegood,
University of Washington Press, is Nicholas S. Weir-Williams, Director of the
Northwestern University Press. Ellegood retired this year from the University
of Washington Press after many years of actively building and enhancing the
line of books produced at this university press. Weir-Williams will fill out
the remaining term of Ellegood (June 1998).
Weir-Williams became Director of NUP in April 1992 and has nearly doubled the
sales, won two national translation awards, and added a trade imprint
specializing in contemporary literary fiction and poetry (TriQuarterly Books)
during his tenure.
He began his publishing career in 1978, training with Croom Helm, an
independent academic publisher in London, England, on the sales and editorial
sides. He set up the company’s first overseas office in Australia and ran it
for four years until the company was purchased by Associated Book Publishers
in 1986. He has been active in publishing in Australia, the UK, and now the
US and brings the expertise of working within the academic press world to the
PMA Board. Northwestern University Press, under Weir-Williams direction, has
250 books in print and is now publishing 50 new titles a year. He can be
