About the Independent Book Publishers Association
Proudly serving the independent publishing community since 1983.
The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) is a not-for-profit membership organization serving and leading the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success. With over 3,000 members, IBPA is the largest publishing trade association in the U.S. If you’re an independent publisher, self-published author, small press, or mid-sized publisher, you’ve come to the right place!
IBPA makes it easier for independent book publishers and self-published authors to navigate the sometimes intimidating publishing process.
Here’s how we do it:
Support & Guidance
Publishing isn’t always a straight-forward business, but with the support of IBPA you can succeed. IBPA provides independent publishers and self-published authors advice and personal service. As a member of IBPA, you can call us any time. If we don’t have the answer, we’ll find it through our unique Ask the Experts Online program.
Deals & Discounts
There is strength in numbers. The products and services you depend on to successfully publish and promote your books don’t have to be so expensive. IBPA sponsors over 30 special publishing deals and discounts so you can save thousands of dollars with vendors you’re likely already using.
IBPA members stay ahead of the independent publishing curve and network with real people during IBPA’s annual Publishing University conference. Then, while waiting for the next conference, members continue their education online with ongoing courses from Publishing University Online.
Innovative Print & Digital Award Programs
You put an enormous amount of effort into your books and you should be rewarded for it! IBPA recognizes excellence and innovation in print and digital publishing through our annual Benjamin Franklin Awards and rolling Benjamin Franklin Digital Awards.
The Independent is a monthly magazine featuring articles about the independent publishing industry. Topics include: legal issues, marketing ideas, industry events, business tips and advice, and more.
Our Code of Ethics
At IBPA, professionalism matters. We believe, as a community of professionals, that the production of content of lasting financial and/or cultural value is just as important as securing open markets for this content. Our members pledge to understand and adhere to copyright law so they can ensure that authors and other creators are properly compensated. In addition, they are honest and fair in their dealings with readers and do not mislead them with false promises or manipulated reviews.
In short, as part of the independent publishing community, IBPA members pledge . . .
- To uphold the highest standards of our industry, to create works of lasting financial and/or cultural value, and to pursue editorial, design, and production excellence.
- To respect the rights of authors and other creators and stakeholders, to observe all copyright laws and conventions, and to never knowingly publish plagiarized work.
- To reward authors and contributors for their work, to be honest in our financial dealings, to write contracts in understandable language, to resolve all disputes promptly and fairly, and to foster equal opportunity in our workplaces.
- To not mislead readers or buyers with false promises, inflated sales data, or manipulated reviews.
- To recycle and reuse and to follow green practices.
The Code of Ethics above was approved by the IBPA board of directors in October 2013. Special thanks to Peter Goodman of Stone Bridge Press for drafting IBPA’s Code of Ethics and Steve Mettee of The Write Thought for conceptualizing it.
